well since muzzle loaders dont have the same restrictions like conventional firearms due it got me thinking

well many black powder muzzle loaders have a caliber of over 50 cal and dont have any issues with the NFA....but if you had a 60 caliber center fire rifle that would probably be a destructive device unless the attorney general decides it has a sporting purpose and in that case it isnt a DD

but from my understanding these laws dont apply to muzzle loaders so it seems you could make a muzzle loading cannon without having any issues with the laws.....

i would love to hear your input on this

Well since you can do a Google search and find tons of blackpowder cannons for sale everywhere and even newly built ones I would hazard a guess there is no problem with building or owning one.

would they be considered exploding projectiles if they were just sealed pop cans?

I think a cannon would have to shoot black powder and not smokless powder to be legal.

whats even cooler than a cannon though is a big ass trebuchet.

Really dont make any difference whether it uses smokeless or black powder.
Build away as long as its a muzzle loader.
Proofing a muzzle loading canon for smokeless could be interesting to watch from a distance.

I was reading up on this awhile back, I think it's legal to build the cannon, but if you drill the cannon for a fuse hole it then becomes a weapon and you have to buy a license for it, some guys get around this by not drilling the fuse hole and using some kind of timed fuse to set off the charge.

Black Powder Cannons And Bowling Ball Mortars

Up here in SW Oregon every Labour Day at our regional World Class firearms range we are treated to the black powder cannon and bowling ball mortar clubs putting on a real show.

Years ago I donated my 16 pound bowling ball. It was loaded up with a full charge of black powder and when it lit off, one could hardly keep his eyes on the ball. Went over 1000 yards.

The cannon club has various stuff including scaled down 12 pounders shooting the formentioned beer cans filled with concrete. Shot 3 foot groups at 500 yards if memory serves.

The coolest little gadget I shot was a "knee mortar" shooting used golf balls. Very fun. Wonder if all this neat stuff is legal in most states? The machine guns were great also. HB of CJ
