Mossberg 590A1 19"
AR15 14.5"
XD40 TAC with the 9 conversion barrel(9 would be easier to find in a shtf situation but 40 is my preference)
I choose the mossberg because IMHO this shotgun is the best all round value for your $$$ out of the box and seems to be ruggedly
built(heavy barrel and all)
I choose the AR15 in 14.5 because the rifle and ammo are compact and light, and the ammo is common.A 223 nato ak would also be a good choice and certainly holds up well under adverse conditions.
Last but not least I choose the XD40 in the tactical version because it fits my hand,it points good, lack of parts, weight, punch of a 40 round, ease of dissassy........I could go on but hey its the best pistol on the market it speaks for itself.
Of course I would want a bianchi um84/92 holster an mag pouches for the xd as well as tac slings for rifle and shotgun. The xd is a tight fit in the bianchi but it works. All this being said your choice of firearms always will depend on where you are urban jungle desert etc.

I like your list very practical and reasonable
yeah +1, he knows what he is talking about

It's true! That's the list right there.

THE 7 essential guns to have:

A .22lr rifle (lever, semi, bolt, doesn't matter).
A .22lr handgun (semi or revolver, doesn't matter).
A .357 or .44 Mag revolver.
A concealable semi-auto handgun (9mm - 45 ACP ideally)
A semi-auto "assault rifle" or "battle rifle" (hi-cap, removeable mags, intermediate to high power cartridge) (AK, AR, FAL, G3, etc.)
A long range bolt gun w/ [b]good optics[b/] (any good rifle in .308 or better)
A 12ga pump shotgun.

No one dares argue with me, mr0w1!!!

creepyrat...i agree with a lot of what you put. That's one of the best lists yet. I respect a man who understands the value of a good shotgun. I don't know how somebody could list a shotgun near the end of their list. You can do so many things with a shotgun that you can't do with any other gun. Bravo.

Shotgun?
I'd rather shoot them at 300 yards instead of waiting untill they get to 30 feet

30 ft....??? 100 yds with a rifled slug. And a shotgun can take down big-game, birds/small-game, breach doors, shoot less-than-lethal rds. It's good for cqb and medium range fighting potentially. If I knew i was going into battle, then hell-yah, i'd want a rifle. But if i could only have one gun...

If that is doable......depends on the environment.Dense bush prohibs long range engagements and the shotgun with ssg's would be ideal. All depends on where you are.The more distance between you and the enemy the better but in certain environments that is not possible.

An email to my older brother, who wants to "build an arsenal".
Quote:
All prices are MSRP and are probably a lot higher than typical. To get some idea of actual market prices, check http://www.gunbroker.com. Factor in a $35 transfer fee, and about $30 shipping to the prices you see on Gunbroker. If you find the exact same thing in a gun store for not a whole lot more, it's a good deal (Make sure the gun store doesn't charge for the background check though).

Pistol:
All of these (Except the 1911) are available in a variety of calibers. In general, smaller caliber means cheaper ammo and higher capacity. HK included so that Austen is represented.
Springfield Armory XD40 Service - Black: $514
Springfield Armory XD40 Service - Bi-Tone: $542
Springfield Armory 1911-A1 Champion .45ACP: $886
Heckler & Koch USP Compact: ~$820

Shotgun:
The Remington 870 is considered the "Standard" shotgun. Don't be wowed by shotguns loaded down with all sorts of cool tactical looking accessories. If there's an accessory out there, it'll fit the 870. You can "make it yours" after buying it. Recoil reducing stocks, light mounts, different sites, lasers, rails, whatever. Nothing says "get out of my house" like that sound of a shotgun being pumped. And it sounds the same in every language.
Remington 870 Marine Magnum: ~$470
Remington 870 Express Synthetic 18": ~$320

Cheap rifle:
Really only one choice here. The ammo is cheap and powerful, and the gun is cheap, reliable, and reasonably accurate. There are many versions of the SKS, the most common of which is the Yugoslavian. Whether you want one new or previously issued is up to you, but they typically come packed in a thick grease called "cosmoline" which requires some work to remove. Call me if you get one, and I can give ya' some tips. The grenade launcher will be of little use, but there are a few versions that come without one (Beware of the ones where "bubba" has removed it). Stay away from fancy modifications of the SKS that try to put it into a synthetic folding stock or put a scope on it. The SKS is what it is, and really shouldn't be modified. If you buy one used, you should probably bring the woman so she can check its condition out so you can get one in good shape.
Yugoslavian SKS: $~180 new, $~120 used.
http://www.southernohiogun.com/surplusrifles.html - Same deal with the transfer and shipping applies here. But it at least shows you what a decent gun store sells it for. Should probably go to a gun show to get this though.

Utility Rifle (Carbine):
Something smallish and handy that can serve multiple roles.
Kel-Tec SU16C: $740
Bushmaster 16inch M4: $1210

Long range rifle:
The Bushmaster is what I will be building (from scratch) over the next couple months: A serious, modular, accurate, semi-automatic varmint rifle. The Springfield fires a heavier round (.308win, as opposed to the military standard for infantry rifles (and the Bushmaster) .223rem) and would be more suitable for larger game at longer ranges. And is ludicrously expensive.
Bushmaster Varmint Special: $1265
Springfield Armory Loaded Standard M1A with black fiberglass stock and stainless barrel: $1727

Gotta have a pistol. Might as well pick up an SKS. Shotguns are great. And depending on what use you have for a rifle, pick a carbine or full-size.

If you have some specific roles in mind, I can get a little more specific (And accurate) with some reccomendations. But that oughta be enough to get you started.
Mostly task-oriented... But hey.
