Wheel Gun Help

I am looking to add to my collection, and am looking toward a wheel gun. I don't really have any experience with these, and would like some opinions from those helpful ones on this great forum. I am wanting to to use it for CCW along with my XD, possibly as a backup gun/alternative carry gun. I have looked at a few, but I don't want to influence anyone's opinions with the ones I have looked at. I'm honestly not sure what caliber I even want, although I have looked at 38 special and 357 mag only so far. I don't think I want 44 mag, and definately not 22. So any help with this would also be great. Thanks in advance.

This is a perfect opportunity for me to ask a stupid question... when you guys say "wheel gun", does that mean any revolver, or are you talking about a "cowboy style" six shooter that you might see pulled at the OK Corral?

I have a little Taurus 85, five shot, snub nosed revolver that I am quite happy with.. but I am not sure if it qualifies as a "wheel gun".

I'm an unabashed S&W fan, and thus I would suggest one of their "J" Frame revolvers if CCW is your primary reason. They are lightweight (15oz. on the 642), and can be had in both .38 and .357.

I like Rugers. Good price, lots of accessories (think holster options), very sturdy.

S&W fan here also. When I CC a wheel gun its usually my 3" 686 .357, or 4" 646 .40 cal. With the right jacket I have carried my 4" 625 .45 acp. I allways use an IWB holster for revolvers.

I almost always carry my XD40 sc, but once in a while I carry my S&W 581 357mag. I really enjoy this gun, it shoots real nice, but is bigger and a little heavier. My wheel guns are older models, but I think they shoot better than a lot of the new guns. My one 38 was made in 1937 and is probably one of the best firing handguns that I have ever fired (I have limited experiece though). My groupings at 25 feet are tighter than I even have the ability to shoot!
I also have a snub S&W model 10 38cal., nice gun but not very accurate over 15 feet.

Go with 357 magnum, then you can practice with 38s. I have a model 85 Tarus 5 shot. It is a good backup at a very good price.
