WD40?
What is every ones thoughts on using WD40 as firearm lube?
Just realized how cheap it was at the hardware store and wondered. I mean the stuff works on about everything from rusty bolts to cleaning tar. I wouldn't be surprised if it helped get rid of warts.

Throw it away.
Really, with the invent of teflon based lubes like Rem-Oil and Break Free, theres no need to even own a can of WD-40. I use Rem Oil around my house for everything we used to use WD-40 for. WD-40 dries to a laquer and I have had several very savvy smiths (one from Briley) tell me that WD-40 has kept more small gunsmith shops in biz for years. For lubing the rails on your Xd and other autos, Tetra Grease is very good. For overall wipe-down, I use some Break Free on an old t-shirt. Rem Oil or a silicone based dry lube works well in lockwork/mechanisms for me. Something else that is a pretty good autopistol rail lube (don't laugh) is M-1 Rifle Grease. Yeah, the red or white grease you can get in small plastic yellow pots at the Army Surplus store. The stuff is cheap and stays on in heat and rain. I think its basically Lubri-Plate or some sort of white lithium grease, I am not sure. But it works....real well! Dad (a retired USMC MP) used M-1 rifle Grease for years on his issue M1911A1 and still uses it today on the pistol he "liberated" when he retired from the Corps. Hey, if that WWII era Ithaca 1911 can still be around today and function perfectly on that lube...it can't be all that bad. Usually we laugh at the old school guys, but I think they were right on this stuff as a good firearms lube. (I have also found that M-1 Rifle Grease is outstanding on the SKSs and other semi-auto military styled firearms) - Brickboy240

nevermind I just found a test relating to firearms with several different oils etc.
Anyway breakfree seemed like the winner to me. Anyone know a good place to snag some breakfree? Seems like most of the gunshops I've checked don't carry it. Which is weird because thats all my dad ever used.

A little secret.
(well, its not a secret..but hey...) Break Free CLP is sold in bulk to the US Armed Forces as "Light Weapons Oil" This can be bought at most Army Surplus stores in small green plastic bottles for MUCH less than the bottles at Wal Mart or the gunstore. I also beleive you can order a case of the stuff online. I buy all my Break Free from the Army Surplus store. Same stuff..why pay more? While you're there, pick up a few pots of that "M-1 Rifle Grease" and try it on your slide rails on an M1911 or XD and dare to tell me that this is not a great (and cheap) lubricant. - Brickboy240

I'll have to see if I can find some locally. If I can... I will.

I think the Light Weapons Oil in the surplus store is the OLD stuff the military used BEFORE CLP.

If you have a muzzleloader use WD40 instead of teflon based oils on it.
