Which folding knife?
Hi all.
I'm looking to get me a good, yet relatively inexpensive, folding knife for my bday coming up. I know a whole lot of nothing when it comes to knives but I got it narrowed down to a couple different styles and brands. I'd like to get the opinion of you fine folks as to what the better knife/brand might be or maybe offer similar alternatives. I noticed a difference in metal. CRKT is AUS 8 Stainless and the Gerber is 440 Stainless. What's the dif? Which is better? I live in Mich so I can only carry a 3 in blade. Had a 3 1/2 inch folding knive confiscated by the po 5 or so years ago. I really liked that knife too. I don't remember what kind it was but I was given the choice to lose the knife or get the ticket and the trouble. I figured the impound, DWLS, speeding and the hot date I stood up was trouble enough and relinguished the knife. I jumped started my truck off the silinoid with that ole knife once. Stoopid, huh? Anyway... These are the two knives I'm leaning towards. I'm leaning towards the Gerber (based on looks) but I like them both and I'm wondering if CRKT is not the better knife. Gerber Kiowa http://cgi.ebay.com/Gerber-Kiowa-Tan...QQcmdZViewItem CRKT M16 EDC http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1 Any other ideas? I guess most importantly is which will be the best accessory to my XD9SC bitone! Thanks in advance. |

Out of the two, I'd pick the CRKT. Both brands are producers of some really great tools.
If you can afford it Benchmade makes a great knife. Kershaw is a very reputable brand as well. Don't worry about the looks of the knife, if you use it its going to get abused, scratched, and dinged up. Just like a gun, make sure it feels right in your hand.

Let me suggest another option - the ken onion series of Kershaw knives ( http://www.kershawknives.com/large.htm. Mine is on page 2 of 6) I have had my share of pocket knives and now have a scallion in brushed silver (they may no offer that color any more) and I can definitively say this is the best knife ever! It is an assisted open - almost a switch blade. Its perfect for one hand opening. Ive had mine for four years and it still looks like new and is only SLIGHTY duller than new. Id definitely look at one of those knives as an option. Mine was $40.

I have a $30 Gerber that I've carried for years, it has been dependable, but I wish it held an edge better. If I ever lose the Gerber or find some way of talking myself into buying a new knife, it will probably be a Kershaw.

Of the two presented I'd choose the CRKT. I'm a fan of their M16 design. Opens quickly and feels good in the hand.

Ok I'm a big CRKT fan. I have http://www.crkt.com/litem1.html
http://www.crkt.com/m16titan.html and http://www.crkt.com/M21sf.html I wouldn't trade them for anything. I particularly like the feel of the M21 in the hand. I also picked up one of these http://www.benchmade.com/products/pr...px?model=10300 Which has turned out to be a good everyday workhorse for not a lot of money.

ive carried an M16Z for about 6 years now and have put it threw hell. I just recently bought a new one with a drop point instead of the tanto blade. i like the tanto blade a little better it seems a bit more heavy duty compared to my new one. i would take a CRKT over a gerber anyday.

A relatively pricey option but the best non-collectable/daily carry knife available:
Kershaw Spec Bump http://store.botachtactical.com/kespbu.html They are on sale at botac.com; most places have them for at least $30 more. |
