McAfee Security/Anti Virus

Time for renewal. Anything better out there. I haven't had any problems while using McAfee, but wanted to check for others if better. I have Windows XP and use IE.

I have cable internet through comcast. I don't know about your provider but if you go to your comcast page theres a place where they give you free firewall/antivirus/privacy/parental control stuff. I get McCaffeys for free.

I use Grisoft AVG Free Edition, which is a free antivirus program.

I've been using it for several years now on two computers, without a problem and without catching a virus.

Can't beat the price.

For free, the Grisoft Anti Virus is hard to beat.
For a paid package I changed to NOD32 a couple of years ago and haven't looked back. I used Norton for a few years and it just proved too problematic and invasive on system resources.

NOD32 from Australia can be found here....http://www.eset.com/home/home.htm
There's a 30 day trial download, check it out.

There was a discussion about this on Glocktalk recently, I believe.

I have used Norton for years, but it does slow down the system, and it is no longer the industry leader. I prev also had a virus 1x, and Norton didn't catch it.

My Norton was up for renewal this month again, for the annual updates. I did some checking and read up on various ones - I then decided to go with ZoneAlarm antivirus. I have used their free firewall for years, and I love it. You can download the program, but for the same cost, I wanted the box and software in my hand.

After checking several stores, I finally found it at OfficeMax. You really have to look, because they sell a security suite, and also the standalone firewall. I only wanted the antivirus (which also comes w/ a full version of the firewall). If I would have had no luck, I could have ordered it from Amazon at a better cost. but then ya have to pay shipping.

Anyway, I have had it for a week now - I really like it. I was used to the interface from their firewall. And, the program comes with a firewall w/ more features than the free one.

I would recommend this program

I'd also recommend looking for an 'off-brand' virus scanner. By this I mean not McAfee or Norton. We use McAfee at work and it's fine, but I haven't touched the consumer edition in years. On a side note, check with your ISP -- ours offers McAfee for free. I know from experience the newest Norton AV products are extremely bloated. They are trying to increase sales by pushing a ton of 'features' but in reality it does nothing but slow things down.

Virus scanning is a simple procedure: check any file loaded into memory to see if it is dangerous. There's no reason to scan incoming / outgoing mail messages, etc. It's redundant! As long as the scanner is checking the file as it's loaded into RAM, and its definitions are up to date, you shouldn't ever get infected. Call me simplistic, but I'd rather leave my processor cycles to handle other tasks and only check for virii when necessary.

In the past I've recommended E-Trust EZ Antivirus -- it was a Computer Associates product. However, I believe Microsoft bought it out a year or two ago, and I haven't followed the product since. Since I pretty much exclusively run Linux now, virus scanning is not really a concern for me anymore.

Make sure you download SP2 for your Windows XP, it has extra security measures in it.

I think Zonealarm has licensed the EZ Trust AV and put it in their antivirus. I was reading some old computer magazine reviews online after I bought it.

I have Verizon DSL, and yea, they do give McAfee for free - but it didn't like to get along w/ an older Win 98 laptop I have. In the past few years, McAfee didn't score as high on some of the tests in the magazines. I finally installed AVAST antivirus - a free program if used for home - on that old laptop last week too. It doesn't meet the minimum requirements for the Zonealarm AV. So far, it seems ok.
