I am by far no expert but did you try to set your computer back in time to a previous restore point?

Try doing this:

Go into My Computer:

Select TOOLS-->FOLDER OPTION, then select the File Type tabs.

Under this tab, they list all the different file extensions and on the bottom section it says "Open With" and there's a "change" button. If you click the Change button, you should be able to select the program you would like to open the file type with.

I'll look for easier solutions, not even sure if this one will work. If it does, probably will not be very fun.

There's an even easier way to restore associations but it's too late now.
If you're interested though....

Hold down the shift key while right clicking on a document type.
This will open a menu where you will see "OPEN WITH"
Select this option.
You will then get a menu listing nearly all the applications on your machine. Select the one you want, for example .doc you would select Microsoft Word.

There is a check box at the bottom that says, "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file." Check that box. This will reset the default application for that type extension.

If the application you need is not in the list, there is a browse button so you can find it.

I am on the road and don't have my broken laptop with me, so I can't give the exact info that may be needed.

Toshiba laptop running XP Pro.

It is my main laptop and now its "stuck"...the one with all my photos and letters and my Outlook address book. It just will not boot up. I get a screen that asks if i want to do a "safe mode" or "normal" or "restore".

No matter what I choose the thing takes me back to that same page after shutting down and beginnig to re-start.

I tried putting my original Windows disk in the CD drive and it wouldn't boot from the CD....I got the same screen as without the CD. (I don't want to reformat and lose my files...but it seems I couldn't even if I did want to).

If I hold down (I think...) the F2 (anyway, one of the function keys) it will give me what looks sort of like a line by line DOS autoexec.bat ...but it stops at the same spot every time.

I tried swithching memory modules so it's not a problem with memory ..don't know why it would be momory but it was something I could check on my own.

I called one of the computer repair places...they said I could have them pull the hard drive and they put it into another computer and they can get my personal files....I guess that's what I will have to do unless there's a way for me to get the thing to start.

Any suggestions?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but it seemed the original issue was resolved.

TIA

Peace,
D.
