To boot off a CD, enter the BIOS and tell it to attempt boot from CD-ROM first, most of the time you'll need to smack the any key in order for it to boot.

Something you can do is install Windows XP overtop of itself without formatting if you don't have another machine, or the adapter to plug the laptop hard drive into a regular machine. Most of your programs won't work, but you should be able to get your data backed up on CD or DVD before formatting.

Just throw the damn thing away and get a new computer. That's what they want you to do.

That's what I'll need to do. The thing won't boot - I already changed the bios so it would boot off the CD.

No one would want the computer. It needs new hinges which cost as much to replace as a new computer (almost). All I really want is the files.

A three year old computer is already old.

Thanks,
D.

$100 huh? Does that mean you owe me like $50 for my solution (hey, not my fault you were "trigger happy" on formating)?
