Trucker gets $37000+ ticket in Penn.

A Middletown, Ohio truck driver for a North Carolina firm received a hefty fine of $37754.54 for driving an overloaded truck that got stuck and tipped while making a turn in mid-March in eastern Pennsylvania.

Bethlehem, Pa., police Capt. David Kravatz said James E. Stephenson, 48, of Middletown, and his employer, Guy M. Turner Inc., of Greensboro, N.C., received 3 citations, including one for exceeding the maximum gross vehicle weight. The fine was the largest ever in Bethlehem, he said. Kravatz said neither Stephenson nor the firm had the proper permits or Pennsylvania State Police escort to haul a 213215-pound steel cylinder that was described as a motor shaft for a large turbine.

(Note: That cylinder weighs about as much as the Space Shuttle!)

He said the North Carolina firm had only applied for an overweight permit and not the "super load" permit which included the police escort. He said city police were not notified about the truck.

Kravatz said load was picked up in Allentown, Pa., on March 12 and was heading through south Bethlehem. He said the truck, which was more than 160 feet long and 16 feet wide, got stuck on a crown of a road while trying to make an 85-degree turn because of the hefty weight of the trailer. "A state trooper in town found the truck and got him off the road and called city police," Kravatz said. "We tried to help him, but he (Stephenson) wanted to do it himself and caught the truck up a second time. We gave him eight or 10 opportunities to do it but when he could not, that forced us to call in heavy tows (trucks)."

Kravatz said the truck "created an incredible traffic backup" about the time of shift change at a large hospital. "The hospital was upset and we took a beating from the public that day," he said. "But everyone wanted to see it."

After 3 weeks, the company obtained the proper permits and arranged the escort that enabled the truck to leave Bethlehem on Wednesday, April 1. As of Thursday, April 2, Kravatz said the local court has not said whether the citations were being contested or if the hefty fine was paid. "Most trucking companies do comply with the law and are legal because they don't want any problems," Kravatz said.

Officials at Guy M. Turner Inc. did not return calls for comment on Thursday. There was no phone listing for Stephenson in the Middletown, Ohio area.

No wonder our roads suck! Idiots trying to haul a 100 ton load by truck. That probably was forged from one of our ingots! We ship them by rail to Bethlehem.

It's been over 20 years but a trucker got caught in Ohio trying to haul a half million lbs. load on back roads. He was hauling a huge hydraulic press on a custom built trailer with 18 axles and tripple tire set on each axle. The tractor was also a custom job, a modified Peterbuilt with a 1200 hp marine deisel. As I remember it the load originated in Indiana and he got caught halfway across Ohio when he stopped for a meal and the truck sank into the parking lot. They made the hauling company pay to have every single bridge on the route he took inspected and they were also liable for replacing any bridge that failed inspection. Never did find out the total cost but it was estimated the inspections alone would run in excess of half a million. Seems to me, PA let that trucker off with a slap on the wrist.

Well I work in bethlehem and live in allentown and I did not hear about this. Unless this was the huge trailer that sat on the side of the road for weeks before being moved.

The price of a nice new car, for checking the wrong box while applying for a permit seams a bit harsh to me.

It's not when you consider the damage he could have done. Just suppose he drove over a bridge with a 30,000 lbs. total vehicle weight rating. HE may have been able to cross it without harm, however that bridge could collapse a year later due to the hidden damage that his load caused. There is a good reason why superweight permits are required and enforced, the escorts are there to make sure that the driver doesn't stray from a route that has been specifially selected to handle the weight and at a speed that will cause the minimum impact damage to the route.

Speaking as a truck driver, I’d say they got off cheap!
The one person who should lose their job (but probably won’t) is whoever applied for the permits in the first place. I’ve never applied for permits myself but from what I’m told, you have to provide the state D.O.T. with ALL the information on the load (height, width, weight and length) and the vehicle you’re going to be hauling it with (length, number of axels, plate number, etc). Then the D.O.T. determines what route you can go on and how many and what kind of escorts you need. For certain loads you may have anything from no escorts, to two, to having State troopers escort you. This is not a matter of “checking a wrong box” somebody lied/withheld on the info for the application.

Believe it or not the escorts are their just to keep cars from getting in the way. The two guys I know that do nothing but heavy haul tell me that, when they get a police escort, 9 times out of 10 the cops ask “how fast can this thing go, I don’t want to be here all day”.

Shoulda just checked the MEGA LOAD box and been done with it.. I think that covers 'super' and 'overweight'...

Not much is going to stop a 213215-pound steel cylinder if it breaks free..
