Question on S&W Chief's Special

I have an opportunity to buy a Smith and Wesson .45 Chief's Special for $400. It is in mint shape and has no wear at all on the slide. Do you guys think this is a good deal. Also are there any problems with this gun that I should be aware of.

Thanks

The gun is rated at $450.00 in exc. condition by Supica in the SC of S&W. I would consider it a fair price for a great little carry gun.

Thanks

Great Name by the way.

Thanks for that info I figured it was a pretty good price. All of the guns I own right now are full size (xd9, Glock 22, and RugerP345) so I think I would like a smaller carry gun. I guess I will go for it.

Thanks

And all along I thought a Chief's Special was still a revolver.

The CS series of 9mm, .40S&W and .45ACP was introduced in February of 1999.

Thanks Frenchy,

I think the models 36 & 37 Chief's Special revolvers went out of production back in the early 70's?????

(about the time the "wondernines" became so fashionable)

I didn't know they had revived the name to use on a semi-auto.

I gotta get out more, I guess.

bd, I don't know about the Model 37, but I know the 36 was available in the late 70's at least and probably later. I was attempting to buy a 36 for a backup while on duty and for off duty use, after giving up on a Model 60 (SS verion of 36).

Well, I couldn't find one as they were sold out, but as luck would have it, I found a Model 60 afterall and bought it. I used it for 27yrs on/off duty.

The 36 became the 60 (stainless), and the 37 exists now as the 637 (stainless and aluminum alloy). Unfortunately...The blued versions like this are no longer available...sad!

I forgot to mention, the Model 60 I bought in 1977 only shoots .38 cal. The 60 of today shoots .38 and 357 and comes with a completely different grip (mine is checkered wood and small. I believe the new ones are rubber and larger)

Also, I know at the time I bought my 60, the 36 (blue version) was still being made, but obviously per Frenchy it's morphed into the SS only.

I just found out the 66 2 1/2" SS, 357 is no longer made. I forgot the model that replaced it even tho the salesman showed it to me.

That would be the 620, retired...It has that funky 2-piece barrel.
