Shooting out the old year

I was wondering if anyone that lived in a city, or other area where you cant shoot guns aside from at a range, were going to shoot out the old year this New Year's Eve. When I lived in Baltimore there were always gun shots at 12 midnight but now I live in a small town in NJ and I dont think it would sit too well.

Never understood wasting ammo "shooting out" the New Year...

Rather spend it at the range than shooting around drunk people people.

When revelers hear gunshots on New Years night, they don't think "Wow, that's a great example of responsible gun ownership."

I see no pros for doing it, but many cons...

Central Floridians Warned About New Year's 'Sky Shots'

POSTED: 11:22 pm EST December 29, 2005
UPDATED: 3:33 pm EST December 30, 2005

Authorities in Central Florida are warning residents that firing bullets into the air to celebrate the New Year will not be tolerated this year, according to Local 6 News.

A stray bullet fired into the sky last New Year's Eve in Orlando, Fla., landed more than 2,200 yards away and killed Henry McDaniel, 75.

After an investigation, forensics experts linked the bullet to an assault rifle confiscated that night at Richardo Roach's home about a mile away.

In October, Roach was found guilty of manslaughter.

Orange County sheriff's Cpl. Mike Ruggeiro said many Central Florida jurisdictions tend to have a problem of guns fired into the air.

"By all means a firearm such as a rifle could fire a round up into the air that could go upwards of a quarter mile depending on the trajectory it was fired at," Ruggeiro said.

Ruggeiro warned that a shooter who fires a bullet into air is responsible for it.

"When that round leaves their residence and their property they still own it," Ruggeiro said. So, whereever it lands and whatever damage it does is their responsibility."

Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.

I was interviewed today by the news and asked to say why it was a bad idea to shoot into the sky. I was supposed to be on at 5pm but the stupid UCLA/northwestern game took forever. At least I was on at 10.

Ca. passed a law in the 90s making it a felony to discharge a firearm in an inhabited area for just that reason. July 4 and New Years Eve brought out all the idiots who shot their guns and didn't have enough sense to know what goes up, must come down.

There was one incident where a boy was killed when a bullet struck him and they weren't able to track it to the shooter.

Houston Texas has a zero tolerance for shooting in the air also. I remember watching on the local news how a guy shot in the air and it came down killing his girlfriend last year.

If you want to shoot in the new year, get your muzzleloader out and drop a 60 grain charge down the barrel followed by a small wad of tissue paper.
Big boom and noting is going to come back down to hurt anyone.

I never understood shooting bullets into the air.

I saw this posted somewhere a couple of days ago... recent event of someone shooting their pistol in the air. If this is a repost, my apologies.

My old man has a working cannon in his back yard. On the 4th of July family picnic, he usually lights that baby off (without letting people know it, so it scares the crap out of you). Good times. He usually either shoots a hill with 2liter bottles of ice or just lots of streamers/confetti.
