NY gun laws RANT ON

Okay this **** is just rediculous! The 6 months I was in PA was like paradise compared to the BS NY puts you through!

Let's compare applying for permits: PA vs NY

PA: Walk into county building at noon with $25. Walk out of county building at 12:30pm with printed permit minus $25! Very easy and painless!

NY: Walk into county building at noon with $5. Walk out of county building at 12:05pm with a booklet, **** loads of questions, minus $5, and no permit.

In all seriousness in NY it is a privaliage to own a weapon, NOT A RIGHT!

Now check this out... Before you can even turn in your APPLICATION you have to:

1) fill out 2 copies of the application
2) Get 4 references from the county you live in. Must know them for 3 years and have their info notorized.
3) Get 3 references from prior state or county, have them all notorized.
4) 2 sets of fingerprints $15
5) 4 photos (taken within 30 days) $20
6) fill out a mental health status
7) Proof a character form of the 4 references you've already had notorized
History of arrests, summons, indicted, charged, including DWI's.
9) Work history
10) After you've run around to all your references, gotten your finger prints, photos, and gotten everything together then you have to get a POSTAL money order for $99.00 and another POSTAL money order for $5 for the county.

After all steps and blanks are following and filled in, you have to wait 6 months to a YEAR before you hear anything! And even after that they can DENY YOU!

I just don't get it! Talk about a damn circus! Why does the state I love so much to live in make it such a PITA to get a lisence to OWN a gun!!!!???

So in comparing time and money, let's see...
PA: 20min and $25! EASY AS CAKE!
NY: 1+yrs and $139+(depending on stamps) WHOLY FAWK!

Okay, rant off until I get the run around from another local agency...

That might be to carry concealed in which case atleast you can get down. Travel one state south and its nearly impossible. On a related note, in NJ you have to fill out 3 copies of a form, mental health form, 2 references, $55 for background check. State law is 30 days for background but NJ takes 90 days. And thats for purchasing.

I live in PA, took 10 minutes for my concealed. I was born and raised in NY and own 100 acres in Western NY, rural area, middle of no where. Called the county about bringing a handgun to my land in the summer, not to carry just to target shoot. I was told NO WAY. Even though I pay taxes and live up there most of the summer (I have a building, well etc there) I can not have a hand gun there. This and taxes and all of the other restrictive laws in NY is the reason I originally moved away from there. Probably will eventually sell my land there and move on again even though it is a pretty and peaceful area to stay in the summer.

My county in PA took longer for CCW....30-45 days.

Frankly, it did not bother me much, as I HOPE that this gives the sherriff time to actually weed out those that would bring dishonor upon legal/ethical gunowners.

Although, I should say it took a hella lot less time to get Child Abuse check through PA State Police to be able to work as a volunteer in school.
Hmmmmm.......

One word - Democrats.

Sorry to interject politics, but this is a political issue, period.

Tom,

I disagree with you on this. This is not a Democrate vs. Republican issue, but a dumb gun law issue. Look at Mitt Romney, the Gov of MA. This man is GOP and anti-gun. He has done nothing to help the gun owners of MA.

If the GOP puts him on the ballet, I am looking for another place to put my vote.

Romney reiterated his support for an assault weapons ban contained in Congress' crime bill, and the Brady law which imposes a five-day waiting period on handgun purchases. `I don't think (the waiting period) will have a massive effect on crime but I think it will have a positive effect,' Romney said.

In the end, it comes down to the will of the people, of that state. Don't like the laws, pressure your state level officials to change the law. No pressure, you get status quo and dumb laws.

This is to OWN a pistol in NY. I had to transfer my pistol over to my buddy's permit just so I was within the laws...

I would like to see an example of people pressuring a Democrat controlled federal, state, county or city government to create a law friendly to gun owners, I don't remember this happening anywhere.... maybe in Texas? I don't track politics and gun laws in every state.

In Ohio, we finally voted in a Republican majority state legislature and governor who a little over one year ago passed the first CCW law. This could not happen when the Democrats were in power.

Gun laws are made by politicians who we elect of course, but gun owners invariably lose when the Demcrats win. Would San Francisco have put their gun ban law to a vote if Republicans where in charge? I doubt it.

And of course, not ALL Republicans are pro gun rights, and not ALL Democrats are against gun rights, just 95% of each. That's good enough for me to make sweeping comments about Democrats vs Republicans concerning gun rights.

All that to even OWN a handgun in NY State, and don't even think about the city.

I used to be chairman of the Albany County Pistol Defense Fund, a coalition formed by several gun clubs to organize a suit against judges who either "bench vetoed" permits by never acting on them, or turned them down for arbitrary reasons.

We sued a particular judge with a young lady of exemplary record who was a highly rated target shooter from CT as our guinea pig.

We won the first suit, forcing him to act rather than sitting on it forever, and an amendment to the law was made that said that a permit application had to be acted on in a specified period of time.

He denied the permit, with no reason, so we sued and won, and he denied it because she was "too young" (a 26 year old mother of two.) So we sued and won, and he denied it again, because she had young children in the house. And we sued again, but eventually we ran out of funds, and had to give up - he delayed the maximum permissable time each time and just flat outlasted us.

Some changes were legislated as a result of our campaign, but not enough.

Then I moved to IL and got a FOID and bought handguns without a problem.

Then I moved to TX and got my CHL.
