revolver question

a friend of mine is looking to buy a revolver and he wants a .357 I told him that I heard you could fire either .38s out of a .357 or .357s out of a .38 but I was not sure please excuse my ignorance but my XD-9 is the first gun that I have ever owned. If someone would please shed some light on this for me it would be greatly apreciated

You can shoot .38's in a .357, but not the other way around. A .357 cartridge will not fully seat in a .38's cylinder unless someone has reamed it out. I don't recommend this because the frame of most .38's is not designed to handle the stress of shooting the hotter rounds.

The .38 (short term) normally refers to the .38 Special or the .38 S&W Special. all the same cartridge.

As you can see...the .357 won't fully seat in a .38 cylinder.

Are you asking is .38 like .380 ACP like .38 special in a .357 Magnum but NOT Sig and NOT 38 Super? Kinda like 9mm like 9mm Luger like 9mm NATO like 9X19 Parabellum NOT like 9X18 Makarov or 9mm Short? OMG not to mention the +p & +p+!! Holy Crap check this out!! http://www.chuckhawks.com/ammo_by_anonymous.htm It'll start to sort it out for you (kinda), but remember that some of it is opinion. It will answer your immediate questions, however. Good luck, and Merry Christmas

The 357 Magnum is longer than a 38 Special case, just as a 44 Magnum is longer than a 44 Special. Bullet diameters in the respective calibers are the same. Thus, the short case will fit the Magnum gun, but not the other way around (in most instances!).
