Years ago, we had one fall down our chimney. I tried putting a rope down to let him climb out, but it either did not go all they way down, or he did not figure it out.
So, I formulated my plan...open the front and back doors, put the wife and kids in a closed bedroom, close all other doors, get a bucket, a small piece of plywood to cover the bucket and put on some gloves.

I placed the bucket under the flue and in a swift motion, opened the flue. A big plop lands in the bucket (turns out that was the soot that was knocked loose from inside the flue) and I quickly placed the plywood over the bucket. It was at that very moment when the squirrel actually fell out of the chimney and landed upon my hand. I looked and him, he looked at me...simultaneously I let out a bellow (something like a AHWHOOoooooooo), the squirrel must have thought "What the hell are you yelling about? I'm the one that has been stuck in a chimney for 5 days and you are 100 times bigger than me!"

So, he finally bails and makes his way to the door and out he goes. I had heard stories of those little creatures getting loose in a house and tearing it up by racing through it.

My wife still tells the story and loves the part about her big, bad, former combat seasoned paratrooper letting out a noise like she has never heard before...all over a little squirrel landing upon my hand!

I had something like that in Scotland. I look down while driving and see a florecent green spider that looked just like a black widdow (except not black). Lets just say I stopped and was out of the car in one motion. Wife still laughs about it. I asked the folks at our B&B what it was and they had never heard of such a thing!

I once had one come down the chimney. The flu was already open so he was hanging there looking at me watching TV. So I slowly got up and opened the doors to the house. He finally jumped down took a couple minute tour around the down stairs and walked outside. He never panicked and started jumping all over things. Of course my neighborhood squirrels were a little more domesticated than most. They would come right up too you and sit on the railing of the porch with me only a couple feet away. If you didn't move to fast they wouldn't either. It's still freeky when they end up in the house.
