Mine came blued. I got it at Turners in like '95. They had about a dozen of them in the back all bran new. I liked that one the best. I think I had to pay $20 more for the laminated stock and it was the only one they had with a blued bayonet (IIRC some of them had a blued bolt carrier too).

I have had good luck using OXPHO-BLUE from Brownells on my old 870.

Thanks for the tip on what bluing to use, Triaged. I don't know if I'm going to go through with it or not yet. I've also seen several SKS's w/ the bolt carrier polished. It looks nice, but I'm a pretty big fan of an all black weapon. Come to think of it, I should probably find a way to stain the wood black.

I'd definately visit http://www.sksboards.com/ to see what folks over there say.

But I don't think you'll go wrong with whichever variation you get. I've got two Yugo's that I'm very pleased with. My first was the 59/66 with the grenade launcher. I'd been wanting to get an M-59 and recently got one from SOG that I'm very pleased with.

Over at SKS Boards, there are two threads running about which is best. One, Chinese vs Yugo and another favorite kind of sks?

But, like they say over there, buy several.

I've got 3 SKSes now... (Pictures after Christmas, hopefully)

1 I bought specifically to be my beater...

And I just picked up two unissued ones with consecutive serial numbers, and all sorts of goodies as far as accessories go, including the range book. Mmmm.

I'd vote for a SKS-D if you can find one. They are kinda hard to find and will be a bit more, but a SKS with detachable mags, what's not to love. Detachable AK mags at that. I know if I ever come across one, I'll snatch it up.

I saw a used one in a gunshop almost 15 years ago. I didn't buy it, but now I wish I had. It looked kind of strange, although I like strange stuff, this one didn't trigger the buy now impulse.
