Z-71 is just a suspension package, not 4wd. Most trucks with the Z-71 package also happen to be 4wd.

I thought you were a Chevy truck guy?

That's incorrect. All Z71s are K-series trucks, which means they are all 4x4s. Chevrolet would not give you an off-road package if you didn't have 4 wheel drive. There are many cases where people put the Z71 sticker on their trucks just to get the look though, so don't assume that a truck with the Z71 tag is actually a Z71.

Naw, they carry the cameras to take pics of the deer they shoot from the truck. The gettin-stuck pictures are just icing.

PS: its 65 degrees and sunny here in Texas right now. You're in the wrong state!
haha yes it's a 4x4, and all 4 were spinning, the front left was just scraping away at ice, and the front right was digging itself in pretty well.

I almost tried to increase the footprint by deflating the tires a little, much like the CTIS on a Hummer, and I also have an air compressor on board so I could have just filled them right back up... but I decided against it. There was a solid sheet of ice directly in front of the truck where if I HAD gotten out on my own, the truck would've slid right down into that sign.

I wasn't going to hit a sign though, I was going to either slide off the edge into the creek or hit the giant steel post that the gate latches onto. Yikes.

Glad it wasn't more serious, but I'm sure that $100 hurts... Ehhem....

What did you take those pics with?
Insurance takes care of it. My roommate's camera.

haha that's exactly the reason why I headed out there right before sunset. I wanted to have the place to myself so I could do the 3 shot sight-in without having to yell "Cold range!" all the damn time and have people look at me like... "What's that mean?" Where do you go instead?

If I had arrived (10 minutes ahead of the tow truck or not) while your truck was incapacitated, I would have tried to pull you out. Perhaps it's just southern hospitality.

I would have much rather seen you offer the tow truck driver a twenty for making the drive out, than paying him $100 for a 2 minute recovery job.

"Hold still while I take your picture....it'll be good for your obituary!"
I've had a similar thing happen to me on ice goin up a hill....
The road is usually closed when it's not safe to drive, but it was open that day. Goin down the road like usual rubberneckin at the scenery....only for there to be a patch of ice some 30-40ft long...all the way across the road...and on the very last hill. I didn't notice it until almost all the way up the hill...and after the back tires broke loose. Sure enough it started to slide sideways like TASF's, but my truck was facin down the hill..and like 10ft drop straight down a gulleyso I stopped and after cussin a minute thought I'd try to power brake it and spin it all the way around and just go back the way I came. It was almost workin when the front tires started to slide. The more I gassed on it the more it slid...I finally gave up and made the 2 HOT chicks (ok not really there was a fat chick in there too but she was doable) get out so they wouldn't get hurt if the truck slid. It took all I had to keep it from goin forwards down the gulley and smashin the front end out of it...E brake and park barely would stop it.
We got lucky and got a ride to the gas station so I could call the Sheriff's dept.....I didn't want some knucklehead to fly down that hill and smash my truck sittin there halfway across the road in the dark. They even sent a deputy to pick me up at the gas station and gave me a ride back to my truck.....I got to sit and b/s with the guy in the nice warm squad car and watch the flashy lights as we waited on a wrecker.
The dude had me out in 10 minutes....after he had to block the tires on the big Ford wrecker...he slid too as he pulled.
The guy wanted only $20 but I was broke at the moment...all I had was a bad check book.
I backed it back down the hill to a turnaround, and left the park.
My girls waited at the top of the hill and stuff for me after the ordeal.....and the park owner that didn't close off the road "Sorry about that"
