AR-15 Caliber
So, I started looking at AR-15 kits and I am wondering about caliber choices. Is there any advantage of of .223 over 7.62 x 39 other than the 7.62 bein cheaper.
thanks

The greatest advantages, in my opinion, of the AR in 5.56 are:
1) It's how it was designed in the first place. Guns start acting wierd sometimes when you make them for a different cartridge. Example: the current crop of .223/5.56 AK's. Very picky animals. 2) Superior accuracy with the 5.56. The fact is that ballistically, the 5.56 is much more accurate and has a longer range than the x39. More to add later when I'm more coherent... :P

Having both, go with a .223/5.56 AR. Firstly because the price difference between 7.62x39 and 5.56 isn't what it used to be - looks like 7.62x39 has been creeping up to $100 per K for Wolf and 5.56x45 has been hanging around $110 per K for Wolf.
Next, if you choose to go with 7.62x39, you'll need a reliable source of mags. Frankenmags seem to work the best, but they are considerably more than USGI AR mags. Finally, the 7.62x39 AR has more noticable kick than a 5.56 AR.

I still can't understand the 7.62x39 cartridge in a AR. It's like putting a Honda engine in a Harley. It may work but it's just wrong
I can live with the Mini-14 turned into the Mini-30 though. I guess I am just finicky. :P
