Every year before deer season many "hunters" ask me to zero their rifle for them.

I used to do this for a few people but recently I tell them to learn to do it themselves.

It is my opinion that if one is not capable of doing something as basis as zeroing their own rifle they have no business using it to hunt.

Shooting is part of hunting but it is the one part so many have no desire to master.

They will spend a lot of time and money scouting and researching everything there is to know about deer and how to hunt.

They buy the best rifle and scope that money can buy in the newest magnum caliber but they will not try to learn to shoot it.

They don't care to buy a new 4X4 truck to hunt in one year and a new ATV to haul on the truck and spend $1,000 on the best clothes and boots and another $1,000 on assorted other BS but they can't "afford" to buy a few rounds of ammo to practice with.

the only guaranteed "drop on the spot shot" is the nervous system, i.e. spinal cord or head.... period. if you shoot a deer in the heart or lungs(god forbid), and if falls on the spot, congrats... you just sent the deer into shock, and its not a result of your "expert marksmanship".

just because someone shoots a deer and it doesnt fall in its tracks doesnt mean they are doing something wrong....

I have to agree with Bobby Lee...I have seen that, too often.

Also..how about the guys that spend the dollars on Sako 75s or Steyrs or other spendy deer rifles...scope them with Nikon or Leupold scopes...then sight them in with Remington or Winchester bottom-line ammo! Yeah..the 10.99 a box stuff from Wal Mart.

They have spent alot already...why not get the most out of the rig by using quality ammo? Hornady, Nitrex or maybe RWS or Norma ammo?

Thats like putting re-cap tires on a Mercedes!

Just a couple of points - a heart shot can & will stop an animal in it's tracks. Obviously many other involuntary functions will follow.

Yes - when shot, the body will go into shock. However, the heart shot will stop blood to all the organs, including the brain.

I'm not suggesting that there's no discomfort to animal with a clean heart shot. However, the suffering is much less than penetrating the lungs or stomach.

Again, my point is that I expect more from those claiming to be professionals. What I saw was an embarrassment, and not once, but twice.

And lastly, if you (and not you personally, meant generally) can not shoot accurately enough because of the conditions, then wait for a better shot. If you are not a good enough shooter to make a clean shot, then go out & practice more.

Maybe we're splitting hairs here - but I've never seen an animal run hundreds of yards with a hole in it's heart. But as I said from the onset, I don't claim to have the experience that y'all probably have. I can only say that when I hunted, they'd drop in roughly the same area they were shot in (± some steps in any direction).
