Time to vent a little of my current frustrations.

For those of you that don't know, I got suspended from college last year for horrid grades as a result of insomnia, missing classes, and a lack of motivation. I live in an apartment near Virginia Tech right now and my plans were to have a full time job and pay for my apartment and all expenses.

The idea was for me to get a taste of the real world so I could get my motivation back to finish college.

As of now, I do not have a job. I worked at a steakhouse as a waiter where I was paid $2.15 an hour and would quite often leave after a full day's work with $8 in tips in my hands. I quit that job because I was offered a full time job elsewhere at $8.50 per hour.

After I quit my job, the other place informed me that the position had been filled... so I figured "Oh well, I will go to work at Wal-Mart, Kroger, Food-Lion, Lowe's, etc, etc until I get back into college... which is only a month away.

It's been a week and a half, and none of those places have gotten back to me. They all have On-Line Applications and they frown on people that actually walk in and ask for a job. Food Lion's web site keeps failing on me, the guy I talked to at Lowe's told me "We should get back to you within 30 days," blah blah blah.

I walk into these places expecting "Yes, we need someone to stock shelves during the night shift. Just fill out this application, come back tomorrow around 9:00 am and we'll do a quick interview right then and there." What I get instead is blank looks, a finger point to the computer where you fill out the online application IN THE STORE, and a kick in the ass to get out the door. All I want is... "yes, we have a job open." or "no, we do not have a job open."

Get this, the lady at Wal-Mart actually asked me if I had any qualifications... ha! "Well let's see... I woke up this morning... um... blood pressure's good... I can breathe... um... do I need to go on?"

I'm giving it a another day before I go to Wendy's, 7-11, Sheetz, etc to fill a position.

Any suggestions?

You can usually count on security guard agencies needing someone....and perhaps you can use your XD there! Seriously, they usually start around the 8.00 range and should be easy to find an opening. Another idea would be to try a bank. If you have any ability to work with money they might start you as a teller trainee....

have you tried to contact a local temp service? perhaps they can place you in a temp-to-perm type position.

I applaude you for applying for so many jobs and not feeling that your too good for a less than premium paying job. I have guys that work for me that talk about when they were looking and couldnt believe that some place only offered them 7.00-8.00 an hour. So feeling insulted, they sat at home like a bum. BTW, they had no formal education or major talents.

I wish you the best of luck and I think if we had more people willing to work like you, we would have alot less people bitching that their are no jobs in America. People have to start somewhere for Christs sake! I would give the temp agency a close look. The ones I deal with on occasion tell me they cant find people that are reliable. This could be a major selling point for you if you are good at selling yourself.

That's a ****ty situation. Maybe look at some car dealerships, they can usually use someone to wash new cars or clean serviced cars.

I know what you mean about finding a job though. I'm currently looking to switch jobs, I've gone into places with 'Help Wanted' signs hanging in the window. Even there you get that blank look.

well aside from the obvious, that they find a job from you based on what u tell them

who ever hires you, actually pays more then what you are making because they pay a percentage of what you make to the temp people, and thats how they make their money

Well I don't know how you feel about this but have you considered the military? I know its a bit of a hard sell during wartime but depending on how you test out there are many very highly skilled and technical jobs in the military that could keep you in a stateside assignment or at the very least away from the frontlines. Thats never guaranteed though and don't let some recruiter tell you it is but not everyone in the service is in Iraq right now. I left college early many , many years ago due to a lack of interest and I joined the service. I got terrific training and it eventually led me on the career path I'm in now and my own business.

It's not for everybody thats for sure but it shouldn't be the very last option for any healthy young man either IMO.
