I only became involved in 2 incidents off duty during my 27yrs. In the first one, I had the guy detained at gun point and sitting down, waiting for the local pd. I had instructed my wife to completely describe me and my clothing when she made the call for the pd. I also had my id out with my badge showing high and moving it from side to side behind me so it could be seen by arriving officers.

In the 2nd incident, (2 juvie carjackers in front of my home, one of whom was armed), I had the wife do the same thing and I had my badge pointing in the direction of the arriving officers (I'm the last home on a cul de sac). IMO, you just have to be thinking all the time about what to do and what you are doing to survive. The remark about tunnel vision is true and a leo has to be very aware of that problem if he wants to survive.

I know of a deputy who I worked with who became involved in a pursuit while off duty. When the new officer came to the loc. where the experienced dep. was detaining the suspect at gunpoint, the new dep. ended up shooting the off duty dep. because he didn't recognize him and the dep. didn't id himself. Tho seriously injured, he survived.

The new dep. was ostracized by some members of the station, despite the injured dep. telling everyone it was his own fault for getting involved.

It would be wrong, shortsighted and basically asinine, IMO, if any dept. restricted their officers/deputies from carrying off duty. I was shopping with my wife and 2 of my kids years ago at a mall when a former inmate (gangbanger) approached me and said, "Hi, Deputy *****." I had already told my wife to take off with the kids when I saw him walking toward us. I told him to stay away from me and my family or he would regret it. Tho nothing else occurred, I'm glad I was carrying. I wouldn't have worked for a dept. that restricted carrying off use.

From the article:

He said every time New York officers confront an armed suspect, they are trained to yell "Police, don't move!" Off-duty and plainclothes officers are told to respond "I'm on the job!" and to never turn their hand or gun toward a uniformed colleague.

Somehow I think this bit of info should be kept inside the department. Now every NY thug is going to yell back at the cop "I'm on the job!".

I am not sure that this will hurt those of us who carry for personal protection.
The reason is that we will not pursue a suspect and will not detain anyone.

We will most likely not be engaged by the time the police arrive. We will have already shot the offending party and will be standing over a dead or injured body. The smart citizen in such a situation will be in an open posture making no offensive moves when the LEO arrives on the scene.
