The entire conquest is the political correctness of using "magnum loads" is starting to not even matter anymore. Imagine the public outcry if some local PD was issueing 44s to their street patrol when someone got shot. Oh no, we can't shoot those boys with MAGNUM loads, that's just not "right".

127 +P+ will make major from a 5" XD over a 10 shot average, then again so will 124 +P gold dots. Out of a 5" barrel, I found virtually no difference in velocity, the same went for a 4" though. The 127s peaked maybe 10-15fps more than gold dots.

I was pretty impressed wiith the 147gr XTPs on a large feral dog and a javelina in the past. The bullet anchored the critters real well and a recovered XTP from the javelina looked like it had mushroomed out like the tests often show. This was run out of a 1994 Belgian Hi-Power.

Again, the 9x19mm got a bad rap for fmj use and that one Miami shootout with the 115gr Silvertip, which was a pretty anemic 9mm load. With the proper loads, the 9x19mm is a good defensive round.

Is it equal to the 357 mag? No, but neither is the 45ACP and nobody really questions the effectiveness of a good 45ACP load...do they?

(I still carry the 45ACP most of the time, but only because I like its platforms better, like the 1911 and Sig 220)

Near Longmont.

I agree to some extent with the 357 Mag comments. I should have been more specific. It rivals 357 Sig with 125 grain factory loads which in turn rivals 357 Mag with factroy loads.

I shoot 357 Mag. Yes, it can be handloaded hot. Goingback and looking at my notes, I had 357 Mag loads right around 600-650ft/lbs. One I got beyond that, the brass was swollen enough that I had ejection problems and very flat primers. This was actual data taken from a 4" revolver. One thing that must be cautioned is many times when 357 Mag load data is reported it is out of an 8 t 10 inch barrel. Take 30-50ft/sec off of velocity data for every inch of barrel shorter. So a 4 inch barrel is 120-200ft/sec slower than typically claimed AND revolvers also are slower than test barrels because they loose a lot of gas in teh cylinder gap.

Now, if you go down and buy Factory (we will leave the "heavy magnums" such as DT out of the discussion) ammo for a 357 Mag and shoot it out of a real revolver, it will be a lot lower than people expect. For instance I shot some factory Winchester 110gr 357 Mag ammo through two different revolvers (one ruger and one colt) with a velocity of about 1300ft/sec. Not too good for 110gr.

This is why I say this ammo approached 357 Mag. It approaches 357 Mag in a similar fashion to 357 Sig being "equal" to 357 Mag.

Yes, 357 Mag has more potential than 9mm ever will its just that most loads don;t do the 357 Mag justice any more.

I did not even bother trying this with the Taurus PT-99 I also own and I am sticking with +P rounds in the Sub Compact XDs.
I'm not that familiar with Taurus model numbers, but according to the owner's manual the PT-92 (Beretta equivalent) is recommended to use a 124 gr. bullet at 1250 fps. The Ranger T's are 127 gr. at 1250 fps according to Winchester's website. It seems to me that the Taurus should have no problems with the Rangers. Just my 2c.
