Left Locking the slide
I just sold my USP .40 and bought the XD in .45 ACP because I needed a weapon with Picatinny rails. The XD seems to be the first choice of a lot of guys I work with so I was sold.
I bought it and brought it home and I am already seeing a problem coming up with the slide release since I am left-handed. I can not lock the slide to the rear unless, 1) I transition to my right hand or 2) Tilt the pistol down to my right so I can engage the stock safety, which allows the slide to move back and flip the slide catch (or release) up with my left index finger.
I realize this will get easier when the spring gets a little more "broken in," but this is a problem since part of my department (and State) requirments is a slide locked to the rear in 3 seconds. I can easily do this in my right hand and I will most likely hold it right handed to get through the qual, but I need some help.
The extension shown here looks like a good start, but it looks like it can only really help with a slide release. Since we are taught NOT to use the slide release (gross motor skills only) it won't really help.
So my question is to Agalindo, who mentioned he is a lefty. Does the extension make it any easier to lock the slide to the rear? And have you seen an extension that is maybe approximately a 1/2 inch longer that runs out toward the muzzle?
I really think a LONGER slide release would be more beneficial than one that sticks out further from the frame. Since you have played with it I would reallly like your input. Thanks.
