I just picked up my XDs on Friday and have not yet fired it. I have been using the snap caps to learn the XDs. I have found, for example, that you MUST be fast and hard racking the slide or it WILL jam. If you slack off just a little - jam. I'm also getting used to the trigger and it feels smoother the more I use it. The snap caps are great for learning about your guns.

I have used AZOOM (The aluminum ones with the rubber insert) but I like my Tiptons better; they have an internal spring to absorb the firing pin strikes, which makes more sense to me. As has been stated, use all safety precautions when practicing with snap caps so you don't blow a hole in the cat....

I purchased a zooms and used them a couple of times mostly to retrain myself after having tumors removed from my chest......they cut me open like open heart. It helped with muscle controle for me but I rarely use them anymore and they lasted about 5 months daily constant use no problems with some wear showing

I can't quote a projected lifetime but my guess is that the Tiptons will last a very long time since the firing pin cushion uses a spring instead of a piece of rubbery material. YMMV.

I have used A-Zooms for years with no problems.

I'm using A-Zooms. I just put one in and move the slide back just enough to reset trigger. I do find I need to bump the slide forward a little to get it to return to full battery.
If you want to to see what a XD-S looks like when it is not if full battery (you have seen posts about this happening at range) this is a good visual

I began using AZoom or Tipton snap caps to dry fire after I had to replace the broken firing pin and related spring in a Beretta Tomcat.
IMO, snap caps are cheap insurance against firing pin damage.

For guns with a hammer and at home, I use a rubber earplug in the channel for the hammer to fall on. I have tried the pencil test and think it fully protects the pin.
A gunsmith suggested it to me.
Protection is important in many endeavors.
