Thanks so much for your insight, I have not read the book or any case studies. I do my best not to have reloads in my carry guns.
I do have this fear of factory ammo getting really hard to get. Therefore I reload and stay within the specs to create a hand load that functions 100% of the time and is very accurate. I was in no way trying to be argumentative.

200 gr H&G lswc target loads no problem. I think I am going to load the Speer 230gr Gold Dot for carry, I have more trust in my loads than I do in loads from a factory. But, if needed, and the rounds does fail, will it be called a suicide?

No argument perceived 08clubman, just good discussion. I think bonecollector and I were simply trying to point out that there are a lot of factors to consider in choosing a defensive load, and that the potential legal issues of using handloads for such are one such factor that each person should consider. That's not to say that such usage will result in legal issues, only that it may add to to the mix in an actual defensive shooting, so each person needs to weigh all of these things in making the choice.

No reloads for CCW??
I reload because I choose to. 90% of the normal places to buy ammo do not have any. Reason enough for me. Not concerned about whether this will be questioned in court.

It is always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6!

Very helpful. I will be using reloads in time so this is all good as I can use several of the bullets and powder I own now with some of your great recipes.

230gr Montana Gold
4.6 gr Bullseye, coal 1.203
New to reloading but I've found this load works fairly well in my xds.
Wish I had more! Only loaded about 1000rds of various brands(MG,Sierra's,HSW,Barry's andHornady XTP)mainly due to lack of supply; but I've found the xds likes a really short "col" for jhp and swrn.

If you can't find any defense ammo in stores then reloading your own defensive ammo comes down to asking yourself "Would I rather be judged by 12 or carried by 6?"
