I love when inexperience speaks and bad talks a product.

I remember when Mac came out with the CAPS LOCK delay to avoid accedental activation. People were flooding forums about their button being broken. They didn't stop to think if it was for a reason.
Hey look, I did not in any fashion say that my XDs is broken or defective. All I wanted to mention is the fact that this is why I will not carry my Xds yet, even after 600 rounds. This can be a major problem if you should accidentally bump the muzzle back. I sure hope this will loosen up after break in....keep in mind, I got around 600 rounds through it and it still tight.

I sent mine back to SA for this exact reason. I hope there is some magic part in there that they can polish to make it work properly.

I doubt Springfield will do anything about this because it does not stop the gun from working under normal firing conditions. My XDS has already made a trip to Springfield (although I did not mention this specific "issue" when I returned it) and it still does this after coming back. Hopefully it is something that will go away on its own after firing more rounds, but it isn't the most confidence inspiring thing even if my XDS functions well at the shooting range.

I realize that the price I paid for a mass produced gun did not include a gun smith fine tuning and firing a few hundred rounds downrange before they hand delivered it to me on a velvet pillow.

A thought to consider - if it does happen to get out of battery in holster, it is going to be pulled back into battery when drawn because the holster will tend to hold onto the slide as you pull up on the frame.
I didn't think of that. Your right! I just hope it loosens up alittle more.

over 500+ on mine and with loaded chamber and loaded mag it will
not return to full battery without being slightly pushed.

My XDs doesn't snap back when I pull the slide back 1/4 when "horizontal". I purposely placed it in the holster with the slide 1/4 open and when I drew it, the motion caused the slide to go into normal battery. It snaps back normally if I try it with the XDs pointed towards the floor. Serial 503.

Who are you to say that it is normal and is the intended design of the gun? Why insult others by saying they are inexperienced for noticing this issue? If anyone mentions any problems with the XDS then your response is always "user error" or not enough lube. Is it considered excellent gun design (or manufacturing) for the slide to easily hang 1/4" out of battery?

As people read this thread my first concern is that they will test the OP's observation, with and without a live round in the chamber, even with their non-XDS pistols. Please observe safety when doing so.

For what it's worth my XDm 3.8 compact 45 also does this with those plastic snap caps.

Would this affect operation in a CC situation?
