XDS Slide Finish--Is this normal???

Im a long time 1911 and Glock shooter. Bought my first Springfield (XDS)

Got it home and looked it over and I am a little dissapointed in the quality of the finish on the slide. It came with a lot of wear on the slide (looks like one of my Glocks after a year of wearing it in the holster and drawing a lot). I then took a brass punch and lightly scratched the slide and it left a permenent scratch on the slide (my Glocks would easily buff out a brass mark).

Attached is a picture when I got it home (I had not even inserted it in a holster yet) Literally brand new. The inside of the gun looks flawless. It is actually the cleanest gun ion the inside I have ever bought new, they obviously only fired it one time because a q-tip didnt even bring any carbon off the inside of the slide at all.

As long as it doesnt rust and funtions 100% I dont care about the scratches. Just curious if this is normal on the XDS's as I dont have any around to compare it too.

It actually looks worse than the picture is showing. The finish is very thin and blotchy. With what looks like scratch markes on one side. It looks like someone took sandpaper and scratched the heck out of it. And areas that look alright really scratch easy. Does melonite scratch that easily?

Those scratch marks come from the factory gear holster. Not sure about the "thin finish".

Was yours a display model?

Look inside your holster and see if there are contact marks.

I have a few of those marks from wearing the gear holster, but not that many.

My marks do not bother me personally because the gun is made to be used, but I understand it will bug some people

IMHO

When I get home I will check the holster. The dealer had it in the display case about a week and said that the gun was never holstered but a few people did look at it and handle it.

I dont care about the looks at all, I just want to be sure it is durable as far as rust issues. I figured if it has a melonite treatment is would not scratch so easily.

Hmmmmmm....
I'd be willing to bet your gonna see marks inside the gear holster.
I could be wrong though

That sucks. Did you inspect it before you bought it?

Those scratches are more likely other softer materials that have scratched off onto the slide. Hit it with a nylon brush and they should come off. I throw my XDM loose in a .50 cal ammo can to go to the range. It gets banged around and it still looks fine.

I've run 1000 rounds through my XDS and it cleans up nicely. No scratches. The finish on the barrel is worn where it comes into contact with the slide. I don't think there is anything you can do about that.

My XD gear holsters haven't done anything like that to either my XDs or XDm 45 compact. Holster marks should go from front to back, not top to bottom like you see in your photos. I would be ticked if they handed me a "new" gun that already had those scratches. I've gone to the range and drawn from the holster many times, and don't see any marks on my slide, other than one spot where a brass case dinged it. I've almost gotten that mark wiped off though.

My finish does not look like that. I've got 750+ rounds through mine. Into and out of holster 50+ times yesterday.
Why did you buy it if it didn't meet your minimum expectation of appearance?

Dunno...
I've got those same marks on my XDsc from that gear holster. My friend gets those same marks on his XDm 3.8 as well. Again, NO WHERE NEAR what OP has I've only used either gear holsters for the first few days utill my EDC holsters arrived. That is the ONLY time I have ever got those marks.

Agreed on normal draw wear running front to back. Just something about my two gear holsters........
Even with the retention adjustment, their is still wiggle/play (back and forth, not in and out) while the gun is holstered. This is what gave mine the "up and down" marks while carrying for longer periods of time, not drawing. Call me crazy, but thats the deal with my "similar" marks.

Again.....just my experience
May or may not be related to OP's issue
