Range Report - XDS at 1000 rounds

Went back to Sportsman's Outlet with 250 rounds of Freedom Munitions 230 gr. RN New ammunition.

The XDS ran great for the first 40 or 50 rounds and then I got the same failure to eject error that I was getting with the Tula. I continued on and got another one a few rounds later.

If it's not the Tula then what is it? I field stripped it and the inside of the slide was slick with molten froglube. Lack of lubrication is not the problem. It was hard to see the ejector in the dimly lit shooting booth so I scrubbed it a little bit with a microfiber cloth and put the gun back together. No more problems for the remainder of the range session.

The best 10 round string. (2 mags, 5 rounds each, 7 yards)


Last 50 rounds of the session were 5 round BSA drills. I was surprised how fast I was able to fire it maintaining control. The groups opened up some but no flyers.

Today's practice puts me right at 1000 rounds.
Here is the performance review:

100 rounds Fiocchi fmj - zero issues
300 rounds Tula - zero issues - Inspected random shell casings, all primer strikes were centered
150 Rounds Tula - 11 Failures to eject!? - Range report with photos
100 rounds Tula - 12 Failures to eject paying careful attention to my grip. My XDS does not like Tula
100 rounds Freedom Munitions - zero issues
250 rounds Freedom Munitions - 2 Failures to Eject (due to fouled ejector, cleaned it and it ran well)

Totals: 1000 rounds - 25 FTE

You might want to try Winchester White Box (WWB) 230 FMJ.
I have run over 300 rounds of this through my XDS with no problems.
If you go to Wallmart it is only $40 a box of 100.
I also shot 25 Federal Hydrashock 230 and 25 Speer Gold Dot 230 with no problems.
Looks like the XDS likes quality ammo

I'm only gonna break 400 tomorrow. I've had 0 issues with mine "so far"....

Mine has been 100% through 750 rounds. Sorry your seeing issues. I'm shooting Remington UMC 230 gr. It runs like a top.

Doing the maths, my XDS is 97.5% reliable overall. Filter for the amount of ammo I carry on a daily basis and it has run 100%. No malfunctions have occurred during the first 13 - 18 shots even using ammunition known to be dirty.

Let's compare that to the service record of the two other guns I've carried on a daily basis.

I carried the KelTec PF-9 for over a year and ran at least one box of cartridges every range visit. On it's last range visit, it ran the first magazine without error and then took a dump in the middle of the backup magazine. Double feed, light strike, firing pin ejection! = Complete and total failure. If it had been a defensive gunfight I had better have gotten the job done in the first five or six shots because the KelTec was useless afterwards. I fixed it and sold it. Full disclosure, I told the buyer exactly why I was selling it. He seemed happy to be getting it. I even turned a small profit.

After selling the KelTec I carried a Ruger LCR. It is the most reliable gun I own. Never had a malfunction of any kind and has fired 100% of time no matter what ammunition I feed it. It's accurate for a snub nose and fun to shoot.

The XDS is as comfortable to carry as the PF-9 with a more powerful round. It's more comfortable to carry than the LCR with a slightly higher capacity, faster to reload, and more a powerful round.

Not always. Heres some excerpts from my reports:

10rds Win RangerT 230gr HP - 1x failure to fire
50rds CCI Blazer Brass 230gr ball - 4x FTF
17rds Win Ranger T 230gr HP (2d round FTF out of a clean gun)
100rds WWB 230gr ball (8x random FTF)
89rds Speer Lawman 230gr ball (3 random FTF)

That's 17 failures to fire out of 364 rounds (all with decent, or better ammunition.) That's one out of every 21-22 rounds.

I still have high hopes.

I'm sorry your experiencing the FTFs. Mine runs like a top.

No excuses, but you might note the XDS's MSRP is less than half (or a third) that of most the firearms on your list. Again not an excuse, just a data point.

Understand. And the XD-S has some features those high $$ don't. That's why I'm sticking with it for awhile. I'm confident it can be made to work. But, it is still malfunctioning.
