I think you're just going to have to shop around. When I was looking around for a 4.5" 9mm XDm, one of the local gun shops near me wanted over $700 for it. Needless to say, I went elsewhere and got a much better deal. I realize this isn't about the XDs, but you get the idea.

Call it what you want. I dont really think its as much price gouging as much as it is free enterprise. Bud's is just taking advantage of the craze. I have gotten many great deals on guns at Bud's. Mostly on used stuff though. Just checked today (7/16/12) and buds has them in black in stock at $662.11. They can feel free to sell them all day long at that price. Doesn't mean I have to buy one at that price. Springfield's MSRP is $599 for Black and $669 for Bitone. As far as prices go for these things, the guys in the "what did you pay" thread on here have found them in the low 400s OTD while I've seen them on gunbroker as high as $900. So, not to be standing up for Buds, but they arent the only ones selling these things above the MSRP. But, MSRP = Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. They can charge whatever they want for them. Illegal? No. Wrong? Depends on who you ask. Will it hurt their business? Probably not.
So, In my opinion, its a little high, but then again its as much their right to sell it at $60 above retail price as much as it's my right to buy it someplace else.....
Best advice. Shop around and get it wherever you get the best price.
As for me, Ill just go to my local gun shop.

I was at a local gun show on Saturday July 7th, they had XDS's for $600.oo
I called my local gun shop in Roswell NM on Monday the 9th, I had them order me one. They got it in on the 12th, I picked it up Friday the 13th, was $539.oo plus tax.
While some gun shops are gouging the hell out of people, telling them they are hard to get/limited availability, my lgs is telling me that stuff. According to my lgs - YES there is plenty of availability, plenty in stock. All your store has to do is order one, I think that is the real availibility problem, they need to order stuff, and they use their lack of inventory to jack with you and charge high prices.
