XDS Range Report - EJECT EJECT EJECT!!!!

Friends, I ran another 150 rounds of Tula in my XDS and somehow managed ELEVEN failures to eject.

Let's have a look at the photos:

Empty case in the chamber, new round smashed up against it holding the slide open.


Again.


And again...


You get the idea. Each time after clearing the malfunction, I put the empty shell casing in my pocket. Here they are:


Current theory:

1. UPDATE: Weak Extractor - Springfield Armory wants me to return the gun for service.

I did label the two magazines to see if the problem was mag specific. It wasn't.

I switched from the XDS to the XDM for the remaining 100 rounds. After the XDS, an XDM feels like a target pistol! Check this out:


When I got home and cleaned both pistols, I found the XDS was filthy and the XDM was much cleaner. Perhaps some of the Tula was dirtier than the rest?
I do remember one ten round string smoked up the whole range. Might have gummed up the chamber causing the casings to stick?



Hope this was just a fluke and that the XDS proves to be as dependable as it's big brother. I've got 500 rounds of Freedom Munitions on the way. We'll see what happens.

Do you have access to a set of calipers? Might be interesting to compare the inside diameters of your XDS and XDm (clean) chambers.

I also hope it was fluke or just really dirty causing it not to eject. Keep us posted please.

I hate to say it but shouldn't it run dirty? Stay tuned for more range reports.

Tula has a lacquer on the case doesn't it? Could it be what the AR's see...when the chamber gets hot the lacquer creates a "glue", combined with the carbon, causes the casing to stick?

Yeah it should, all my XDm's will run dirty... Maybe just a fluke hopefully man!

I've never had that problem w/my AR's running Tula.

See guys at the range struggling with that issue all the time. Also know of guys that run nothing but Tula and swear by it. Never have run it through my ARs. Just throwing' it out there for food for thought.

They ditched the lacquer years ago. Modern Tula is polymer coated and the "glue" thing is urban legend. (best I can tell) There is something about the expansion of steel -vs- brass and not getting as good of a seal in the chamber causing problems in many AR-15's I read a bunch of reviews that my Ruger SR-556 will not cycle steel case ammo. I trusted the reviews and stuck with brass. Might be the same thing happening with the XDS.

Good idea, unfortunately I don't have any calipers.
