Decisions, decisions...Which XDM to choose?

I really love everything about the XDM's. I've almost decided on the XDM SC 3.8 9mm, but want the trusted info of you XD users. lol. Again, I love all of the XDM's features, I've held/handled the gun...but never shot it. I've really only ever shot a S & W .22 pistol. I want a gun with the ability to carry, serve as home protection and good on the range as well. My main concern is about the caliber as to carry. I've heard people say "9mm is all you need." or "This gauge is the best to carry." Ammo cost is, as you know, always an issue, but I want something that'll take care of business with no trouble. lol. So, How is the recoil of each caliber(9mm, .40, .45) in the SC 3.8 versions? What are the pros and cons of each caliber as far as: 1.Carry 2.Home Protection 3. Target/Range shooting? Any info or suggestions are gladly excepted. Thanks.

The 3.8 is AWESOME! I carry, protect the home, and compete in uspsa (limited div.) obviously upgraded, and compete in idpa as well. I own a custom xdm 3.8 .40s&w full size grip it performs flawlessly in every activity its involved in! Went with the full size grip because i like the extra capacity and with a crossbreed super tuck it conceals comfortably and NO one ever knows im wearing it! The recoil on the 40 is snappy but after a few hundred rounds (Ive shot 4k and counting) its very controllable and ill take a .40 over a 9mm for pd any day of the week! Hope this helps seeing that i do it all with just my 1 xdm. Good luck on your purchase imho you cant go wrong with any of the xdms available.

I find the XDM 3.8 SC in 9mm fabulous for all around use. I use it in all the roles you describe. Ammo is cheaper in 9mm so I put a lot more down the range, and I'm a believer that hitting what you shoot at is the critical factor. I also use a Cross Breed Supertuck and the combo carries very nicely for me.

The sc is very nice i have an xd sc in 9mm and a full size xdm in. 40 my xdm is much lighter so i assume that the xdm sc is a very light gun as well. Both my springfields are very accurate

9mm.
You can get the same bullets in it as any other caliber, but you get more of them. Sure, you may hit the guy in the head w/ the first shot but then a 22 would be all you need. Odds are you won't be very accurate when the conditions arise that require you to pull and fire. so the more ammo you got the better.

And 9 is cheaper to shoot than 40 or 45 so you can shoot more (more fun!) and more practice means you'll be more familiar with the gun and more accurate.

9 and 45 are more accurate than 40, at least that's what I see when the magazines test all three calibers of the same gun.

Thru an error with my reloading scale i"ve shot 2000 rounds of +p, +p+ out of my XD without any issues. As in my MIN loads were chronoing at 1250 fps...(scale was reading .7 gr low...so my min loads were actually OVER max loads!) I'm tempted to make one of the hotter loads up to see what they were doing.. way off the flipping charts no doubt. Curiuos is all..but then that's what killed the cat.

I looked at the smaller XDs and teh smaller they got the more top heavy they felt to me (unloaded). I love my Xdm9 5.25. It's accurate (even with very very hot ammo) and durable.

Your choice is an excellent one...or the 3.8 compact is the other excellent choice. I choose the compact due to the two options on mag capacity. You aren't going to go wrong with either.
