TNJ Ammo

Has anyone used TNJ (total nylon jacket) ammo? I sure love the lower price point than brass and copper. I wouldn't trust this ammo for self defense, but how about just hitting the range with it? Pro's/Con's?

Just bought a box of .45 caliber for my XD and a box of 9mm for wife's Ruger SR9. Planning to try it this weekend at the range.

The video on the Cabela's web site was interesting - looks like the nylon jacket prevents a lot of fouling. I'm just surprised that the nylon doesn't melt with the high temperature.

FWIW I have used the regular CCI aluminium cased rounds for a long time and never had any issues, so figured I would try a box of TNJ before buying in bulk.

The concern of the nylon melting was my exact thought as well. Yes, I first saw the ad in the Cabela's mailing and then the video as well. Please report back how it works for you at the range. For the good price point and promises of less fouling, I'm for one intrigued!

I'm intrigued but being 33% more expensive than most FMJ's just isn't worth is in .45

Where are you getting your prices from? Cabela's lists a box of 50 TNJ for $19.99 and a box of 50 Eagle FMJ for $24.99.

One of the big advantages of TNJ is that nylon is a lot cheaper than copper, so the ammo is correspondingly less expensive.

I'll find out how it shoots this weekend. If it performs as well as FMJ at the range I know what I'm buying a lot of in the future …

The Cabela's website and the Walmart store shelf? There is a whole thread dedicated to the walmart prices. At that point it is basic math.

I can go buy 100 rounds of Federal FMJ at Walmart for $29.97 right now, in fact I brought home a couple boxes tonight. So at $0.30 (29.97/100 rounded to the nearest penny) per round the TNJs are 33% more expensive (since the TNJ is $0.40 per round or 19.99/50 rounded to the nearest penny)

Sounds like they're running a scam on gullible people to me. Use cheaper materials and charge you a very heavy premium.

This TNJ ammo works as well as advertised. No issues with feeding or jamming, and the barrel is cleaner than when using regular FMJ.

The blue nylon jackets got a couple of second looks …
