For range use in my Gen 4 G17 I run 115gr Blazer Aluminum or American Eagle FMJ. CCI Independence is also good range ammo. I for one also have no problem with using steel cased ammo. Clean the gun regularly and it shouldn't have any corrosion issues.
My Glock is a HD gun and I keep it loaded with Speer Gold Dot 124gr+P JHPs. My gun feeds them reliably and groups well. Remington Golden Sabres are also a good load choice IMO.

If you buy Hornady, Buy Hornady Tap Or The Custom, both use the XTP bullet, go for the 124gr or 147 gr. It's been around for a while, penetrates well , but expands less than some of the newer designs that Agalindo listed.
Can also be found in Black Hill ammo and Fiocchi Extrema ammo.
I don't know the how good their new Critical Duty is , but the Critical Defense appears to be a bad choice, others here may/will have worst things to say about it.
From personal experience, i tried the Critical Defense and it would hang up on the feed ramp on 2 of may handguns(red tip seems catch, this was a couple of years ago), no other ammo has ever done this.
All FMJ ammo seems to work fine for me.

I used to carry Hornady CD in my 9mm and LCP until joining this forum. Didn't realize how pitiful this stuff was. Since then swapped to Speer GD. Thanks folks!

I use Speer Gold Dot 147+P in all my 9mm pistols. I have found that the 147 and 147+P has the best accuracy for me in my XDm and Glocks.
I also found some ballistic gel test of the 147 weight bullet on line and they performed well even threw clothing.

I have run WWB, PMC, Sellier & Bellot, Summit and Blazer range ammo thru my XDm 5.25 9mm and XDm 3.8 9mm Compact with no hiccups at all! If I don't buy in bulk WWB at Walmart is normally the least expensive. When I buy 500 or 1000 rds. I normally get it for $10.50 per box of 50. I use my range ammo for my personal defense.
Good luck!

Yes there is!
Best 9mm self defense round is Speer Gold Dot 147.
Best range ammo is all of the Hornady CD you bought before you realized it is garbage.
Prove me wrong!

The 147gr Gold Dot will not feed reliably in one of my 9mm's.
Ergo, you're wrong.
From one of my usual sources...

The keys are:
-- Cultivate a warrior mindset
-- Invest in competent, thorough initial training and then maintain skills with regular ongoing practice
-- Acquire a reliable and durable weapon system
-- Purchase a consistent, robust performing duty/self-defense load in sufficient quantities (at least 1000 rounds) then STOP worrying about the nuances of handgun ammunition terminal performance.
