Loose barrel on 9mm

Hey guys and gals!

I apologize in advance if this is a duplicate question or posted in the wrong spot, I am only slightly more familiar with forums than I am firearms, especially handguns, so bear with me please.

I bought a XDm 9mm 4.5" barrel handgun last week, brand new from Scheels. It is the model with the stainless steel slide, very nice looking gun.

I took it out today for the first time, and to no surprise I couldn't hit crap with the gun, at first I attributed it to being new. Though I was spot on with my rifles.

Anyway, I got home and was cleaning the gun and noticed that when the slide is open, the barrel is very loose, the 1.5" or so that is exposed when the slide is opened can wiggle left to right and back and forth quite a bit.

Is this normal? Could it be contributing to my inability to hit a target at 15 yards?

If anybody could shed some light on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you--Jeremy

Hello & welcome since this is your first post!
W/the slide locked back it is normal for barrel to have some movement.

Movement when the slide is closed could be cause for concern. Movement when the slide is back is normal.
Welcome to the club and enjoy your new gun!

Hey thanks guys! I am enjoying the gun and the hobby overall has already got me wanting more! I just got approved for a CCW, so my next purchase will be something I can carry easily.

Thanks for the info on the barrel. Knowing that play in the barrel with the slide open is normal eases my mind and just lets me know I have a long way to go when it comes to handgun use. I'm sure I will have more questions in the future. Happy 4th of July to ya!

Try starting off at 7 yds, when you are getting good groups at this distance then start moving back. Triton 20
