XDM 5.25 9mm first time out..

Well, I finally got a chance to put some rounds downrange with the new toy.
The gun is nice, finish is good. I tore it apart prior to range time. Found one small burro on the left rear frame rail, though it seems to function fine. Seems a pass or two with a fine file would remove it. I need to play with the different backstraps to see which I like best. I took it out with the medium one from the factory.
I've never owned a double stack pistol. Loading the mags was made easier with the mag loader. after about 10 rounds, I'm not sure I'd want to try it without it!
From a functionality standpoint, the gun was flawless. I shot cheap CCI blazer 115gr through it. No failures of any sort.
First time out, I was just interested in the handling of the pistol. I did not have a bench for pure accuracy testing. I shot stronghand supported for all shots. mostly between 7 and 15yrds. Some slow fire, some rapid fire. I did shoot a bit on the move and also did some quick double taps drawing from the holster.
All in all, I like how the gun handles. It shoots well to point of aim. On slow fire strings from 7 & 10yrds I'm able to keep all good trigger pulls in a 3inch circle. All my misses were my fault and I'd seem to have a flyer 5inches low and left periodically (1-2 in each 10-15 shot sequence).
It needs a better trigger. I'm probably going to shoot more before I decide to do it, but I think it would REALLY benefit from something done to the trigger. I'm used to my Sig, getting used to the feel of the trigger on this with the trigger safety thing may take some time.
The 'texture' on the backstraps is quite aggressive.
The left upper portion of the grip above and to the left of the grip safety, near the roll pin hole his annoying on my thumb joint. It is pretty boney and I have had this same trouble on other guns- Kahr PM9. I wonder if anything can be done to modify how this hits me. Trying the different backstraps might change things a bit.

Can't wait to go do some more work with it!

I am not sure about XDs as I have never owned one, but what you stated above is pretty normal for XDMs. I just fill the mags up and let them sit for 2 to 3 days. Then empty them for a day and repeat by filling them up again and letting them sit for another few days. This tends to work the mag spring some and then any additional mag fills should be easier.

Also common to the XDMs is that the factory trigger does actually get better somewhere between 200 to 500 rounds. But, you may still find the need to improve on the factory trigger. If so, there a few really good and tested options for you:
  1. Springfield Armory Custom Shop
  2. Powder River Precision
  3. Canyon Creek
  4. Springer Precision
Glad to hear your had a pleasurable experience with the new firearm. I have the XDM 5.25 in 40S&W and I am making it my dedicated USPSA Limited firearm.

Good Luck And Be Safe!!!

Not sure what you mean about the trigger. Mine is very easy to shoot, nice clean break and extremely accurate. I've had a couple thousand rounds of varying brands through it and it eats 'em all just fine!

Trigger has a ton of uptake, which really I don't mind much as it is very light pressure. But then the trigger pull is decidedly heavy. It breaks cleanly, just heavier than I expected. I don't have a scale to measure it to give you a number though. I really want to clean it out again and shoot 500 rounds or so before I decide what I really think of the trigger though.
