9mm 3.8 xdm slide issue

As the title says, I have a 3.8 9mm and every so often once I finish a magazine the slide doesn't lock back into place. It doesn't happen every time but probably once every 3 or 4 times. What causes this? I'm pretty religious about cleaning and maintaining my firearms so I don't think thats it, but i'm certainly no expert either.

Um, watch where you place your thumb...I bet you hit it on the last round and release with out even know it...
Or the slide lock might need to be replace.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

Your thumb causes it. During recoil, stuff moves around and it's pretty easy to flick the slide release inadvertently.

I believe you GlennB, my 3.8 9mm does the same thing.
I shot one handed to make sure if it failed, my thumb would not be the cause.
It failed, then didn't fail, fail, fail , no fail.
FYI - I don't recall ever having a failure with my long magazine.

yeah i'm a left handed shooter so I know my thumb isn't triggering the issue. I'm guessing the slide stop is faulting.

Possible causes: Your thumb is inadvertantly hitting the slidelock and preventing it from being push up by the follower. or The follower is not properly engaging the slide lock with when the last round is fired. Does it only happen with a certain mag or with both? If both then either it is operator error (your thumb) or the slide lock itself has a problem.

For me, I kept pressing my thumb on the slide stop so I know why.

Check that the slide stop spring is not broken. Field strip, drive out the 2 pins that hold the trigger group, slide out the trigger group, slide stop and spring.

Also check that the short mags are the same distance from the release slot to the top as the long ones that don't fail.
