The primary difference between the XD Service V-10 and any other XD is that the barrel is ported. There are 2 rows of 5 small holes on top of the barrel starting about an inch back from the muzzle. Each set of 5 holes is about an inch long and are matched with 1.5 inch cuts on the slide at either end of the top of the slide. The V-10 is offered in .40 S&W only. The purpose of porting the barrel is to tame the recoil and muzzle flip of the 0.40 S&W. There is not a XDM V-10, only XD. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to add that I have never shot a firearm with a ported barrel but from what I have read once the gun goes bang the porting will cause the noise to be directed towards you so the noise will be louder. How much louder I do not know. Also, there will be significantly more muzzle flash. The noise and muzzle flash will be more pronounced if you are shooting indoors versus outside during daylight.

I appreciate the information, Steve. I have one more question. out of the 4 length barrel lengths 3.8", 4", 4.5" and the 5.25" which would be better to carry? The reason I am asking is I shot the 5.25 Tactical and I hit the "x" 4 times first time shooting it. That is excellent to me because I dont shoot enough to be that accurate. I want something that is good to carry but not so bulky to pull down on one side either. I am looking at getting two guns and I thought that the 3.5 compact would be a good one to carry. Is it just as accurate as the 5.25" , I know most of it has to do with the shoot but with me hitting that X it makes me wonder sometime. I have a Sig P250 that is compact with a 3.9" barrel but I am not as accurate with it. I will have to keep practice with it so I can stay close to my target.

If you are going to carry the 3.8 is great and for as small as it is it shoots very accurate. The normal XDm at 4 in can be carry and target/match just as easy tho, heck with my Cross Bread IWB holster I can carry my XD Tactical 5 in.

First off you are getting multiple things confused. There is no V-10 ported XDm, only in XD. Secondly the V-10 Ported doesn't come in different barrel lengths, so if you want that pistol it will only come with a 4" barrel. Third, for concealibility purposes the barrel length really doesn't play a factor, the height of the pistol will have the most impact for CCW. Fourth, if your stating that "I don't shoot enough to be accurate." just stop right now while your ahead if your thinking about carrying a firearm. Practice practice and more practice makes you a better shooter and a more familiar and comfortable shooter with your chosen firearm. So it doesn't matter if you buy a 3" or 5.25" barrel pistol because you should be putting a large amount of rounds through it to better understand your pistol and become more accurate. Most guns are far more accurate than the shooter themselves.
It sounds like you need to continue to do much more research before making any decisions.

with that Cross Bread IWB holster do you carry on your side or inside waist band of your jeans? I am thinking about carrying it inside the waist band with it in the small of my back so if I need to reach for it I can reach behind. I may change my mind later on. I really liked that 5.25" Tactical. I was thinking that going with the 4" would be best for me after what you were saying because that would be better for me all around. My second gun I may get that 5.25" to keep by my bed.
Thanks for the info.

I am going to do a lot of research. This is just one place that I start asking questions and some places gets to see my face a good bit before I decide to get what I want. There is a range I got to that will let you shoot any of their pistols thaty have for rent on a certain day for free. I am going to go and shoot then and I know I need to practice and noone ver gets enough practice. I know I will when I have what I feel comfortable shooting with. I have a P250 Sig and I love it because I can put that in my front pocket of my jeans and no one can see it. I like the XDm because it and the Sig can use different type amo for practice and not start jamming on you.

Any glock, springfield, smith and wesson, beretta, ruger and others will feed all types of ammo not just the "XDm". Renting is a good idea and a good start to help you decide. The only big difference between and XD and an XDm is the match grade barrel.

Batts,
Looks like you are getting some good info from some of the other folks on the forum. Researching and renting various firearms is about the best path you can go. I can't really give solid advice on the best carry size since I live in IL and carry is not an option so I do not have any carry experience to pass on to you. Like I said, it sounds like you are on the right path. Let us know what you eventually decide on.
