Don't get me wrong, the 40 will knock the guy on his A$$ right now, the .380 will still get the job done.
9.65 mm? Where'd you see that?

.380 is exactly the same diameter as 9mm Luger/Parabellum, .355".

Perhaps you're thinking of 9x18?, AKA 9mm Makarov?

Due to the point system (75 needed) on imports, I don't see SA ever offering a .380.

Characteristic Points
Length: for each 1/4" over 6" 1
Forged steel frame 15
Forged HTS alloy frame 20
Unloaded weight w/mag (per oz.) 1
.22 short and .25 auto 0
.22 LR and 7.65mm to .380 auto 3
9mm parabellum and over 10
Locked breech mechanism 5
Loaded chamber indicator 5
Grip safety 3
Magazine safety 5
Firing pin block or lock 10
External hammer 2
Double action 10
Drift adjustable target sight 5
Click adjustable target sight 10
Target grips 5
Target trigger 2

Notice that the XD is Single action as defined by the ATF. That is 10 points missing. But the loaded chamber indicator (which glock also has) adds 5 points. Grip safety, 3 points, etc, etc.

Your .380 is NOT 9.65mm.

It is 9mm--.355. In Europe, it is commonly called 9mm Corto or 9mm Kurz--"9mm Short".

And 9mm Makarov is .365, iirc.

And as for .40 knocking someone on his behind, you may want to take a look at the guy who was hit by a .40 22 times, 17 of them center mass, and kept right on going...you're not packing a phaser.

I could be wrong, but I thought that was a 9mm that hit the guy 22 times. I believe you can read the account (and see photos) in a book by Mas Ayoob (among other places).

You are, however, right that no bullet is a magic guarantee. That's why you shoot until the threat is stopped. If that means 1 bullet, great. If it requires 22, then keep shooting.

As far as the OP; I'd love to see a single stack 9mm XDm that's flat and small enough to slip in a pocket holster.

The incident I was referencing was a .40.

Import Restrictions

The 1968 Gun Control Act added a "sporting purpose" test which barred imports of military surplus rifles (a goal of many domestic gun makers) and a "points system" for imported handguns which barred from importation handguns based on penalizing features (short barrels, small caliber, short overall length or height, non-adjustable sights, etc.) believed to define the Saturday night special class of handgun.

Ok, that puts a damper on it if they were to make it in Croatia like their current guns.

HOWEVER, for the sake of argument, let's say SA was able to manufacture it here in the States (whether at their own facility, or possibly farming it out to another manufacturer, doesn't matter) so they don't have to worry about the handgun importation restrictions. Would you be willing to buy one then?

Not true! .380 and 9mm use the same diameter bullet.

I bought the XDm Compact because I wanted something more than a single stack 9mm or .380. If I want something like that there are plenty on the market.

One thing I do know is most cops quit using the 9mm a long time ago. In my town where I work next to the cops, they have all gone to .40's. You put enough PCP or "other" stuff in ones system and I am sure they can keep going for awhile.
