22 9 and 40 will all do the same damage if the shot is placed correctly. I vote for personal comfort 9 rounds are cheaper than 40 by far cheaper 10.00 for a box of 50 9mm or 20 for a box of 50 40... I am starting to reload because of the 40 cal cost. when I can reload a box for 8.50 for the 40 and 6 bucks for the 9mm. but comfort is key and learning the weapon is even a bigger key I never owned a 9mm until last week always 40 cal but I love the 40. it is MY round of choice.

Comfort is the biggest reason for choosing which round I feel and what you currently shoot with. Also see if a local range has ones you can rent to test them both out for feel!

WOW Just in where do you buy your ammo lol that is some expensive 40S&W unless you are buying the top of the line ammo or hollow points. I buy 50rd of federal or independence for 15.00 at lowpriceguns.com in bellevue or i go to walmart and by Winchester White box 100rounds for 28.99. but i agree reloading is gonna be the cheapest, but i hear you don't save money you just end up shooting more rounds....lol great quote from someone on the forum

My decision was based on the recoil and ammo cost for my first gun. I went with the 9mm because it was more comfortable to start with. My friend reloads so it was more cost effective to go with 9mm also I can always find ammo under $11 bucks if in need to buy more.

9mm vs 40 debate is very simple, and which one you decide on should solely depend on 1 factor.

What's the cheapest and most available thing locally, and what do your friends use? It's a logistical choice, not a performance choice.

Handguns are always going to be handguns, even a big nasty 10mm doesn't begin to compare to a basic rifle. The difference between a little 9mm and a 10mm doesn't make much of a difference to what ever is shot by it. If you aren't sailing one through the vitals, it isn't going to be a 1 shot stop with ANY handgun caliber.

I have something in about every caliber between 22 and 454 including wildcats. My personal favorite round for controllability and performance has been the 45gap. 9mm followed shortly after that. Sadly I'm stuck with using 40s for logistical reasons.

get'em both and you can never have second guesses.....I dont make problems I cannot solve with a split second. I love both calibers and shoot them both really well.

Yep . . . I agree. I have an m 4.5 .45, m 3.8 .40, and m 9mm 3.8 "compact". Figured I'd just cover all or most all of the debate and be done with it. Even have the Bar-Sto 9mm "conversion" barrel for the .40 (hadn't had it fine tuned or fitted yet though). That's about it although I have seen the SA "TRP Operator" (.45) that I want but that is pretty $$$$.

When you price check the ammo prices, make sure you are comparing apples to apples (i.e. brass to brass) AND your pricing the stuff you are allowed to use where you plan to shoot. Many indoor ranges require brass casings.

It's pretty much a toss up and should be down to what you are more confident shooting. There are few rounds so powerful that a miss is able to stop an attacker, go with the one you can make hits with.
