i already have an XDM in .40 but want something in 9mm to shoot the competitions. i don't want to use a barrel conversion because from what i've read on the forum the extractor is a bit too far from the rim pf the round and it can have FTE's... i don't feel like dealing with that, plus i'd liek to have a gun i can reliably carry as WELL as shoot IDPA (after all, isn't that what idpa is all about? getting good with what you carry?)
p.s. if they don't change the forum back to how it used to be soon i don't think i can post here any more. i get a headache after reading every post!

WOW! You're right! This is very difficult to deal with. What a BAD color scheme. Just because it works to advertise the XD doesn't mean it works for a forum....
The M&P isn't really comparable to the XDM. The M&P Pro is. The M&P Pro comes with fiber sights, much improved trigger over the M&P, and a 5" bbl. The M&P has a 4" bbl, IIRC. The Pro is more comparable in price to the M as well.
The M&P will give you more versatility because it can shoot in SSP or ESP whereas the M cannot. The M&P Pro is only available in 9mm. The M&P is not as easy to get after market parts for but Speed Shooter Specialites has some pretty good stuff for it. Some of the parts, such as the recoil system can use Glock parts.
The M&P has ambi slide release and reversable mag release. My Pro tends to launch 50 fps slower than my XD Tactical and my Glock 34, which tend to get similar performance on all loads. The power drop could be very different from gun to gun of the same model, but I'd bet it is generally lower.
Other than the M&P's ability to shoot in two divisions, I don't know if one has any serious advantages over the other unless you need the ambidextrous feature. I have XDm and the M&P Pro, and I'd prob go with the Pro if I had to choose, because I like longer guns and I like the ergs just a tad better and you can shoot it in SSP and ESP. But I much prefer the XD Tactical with a PRP trigger to either of them. But, it requires a second gun for SSP. But I use the XD Tac for ESP and G34 for SSP.
I would not buy a std M&P. The Pro is really good right out of the box, esp with a little polishing.
