magazine load for personal protection

I want to keep a loaded magazine in my safe for emergency purposes. my question is how much ammo should I keep in it? If i fill the magazine (19) is that too much pressure on the spring long term?

I have 6 bullets in there right now and I want to keep this filled to a point where I leave the smallest amount of possible firing error.

Most/all here will tell you to keep it full and keep the mag in the gun and keep a round chambered. How much would it suck to need 7 shots, but only have 6. I'd keep at least 15 shots, but 19 would be better.

You should keep the bullets in the gun. Not only that, but it's normal to have 2 full backup mags. I have a mag in the gun, and then I have the two mags, loaded that I use at the range. Granted, it's the wrong kind of bullet, but if I need 57 bullets, I'm not sure it'll matter that much if they are FMJ or JHP.

If you are going to keep 6 bullets in a gun designed for 19, why not just get a revolver?

The reason to choose 9mm for defense is capacity. Why not get a 45 if you are fine with 6 rounds?

I agree with smasraum. If you are going to own a weapon for self defense or home defense, don't worry about wearing out the mag springs. They are replaceable, your life is not. Buy several magazines and rotate the ammo through them if you wish. Extra back up mags carried on you when you are CCW is a must in my opinion. I, like many others, carry a fully loaded weapon (one round in the chamber and a full magazine in the well). Be safe and good luck to you.

bingo!!! we've got a winner!!!

pacific - this is what you want to do... rotate the mags every couple weeks, and you should be GTG.

BTW, not sure if your XDm9 is like my XDm.40, but if it is, then topped off mags are a little tough to seat/eject. I prefer to download to 14... (2 less than full capacity). makes the mags seat/eject easier....

Magazine springs wear out from being loaded and unloaded (compression/extension cycling). The will not lose tension from being left full. Load ALL your magazines with quality HP ammo that you have qualified by shooting 100 rounds trouble free though your gun.

I have heard stories of 1911 Mags found from WWII, Loaded with 7 rounds for some 60 odd years, put in a gun and fired with no problems. I think from another forum with the same question...
