Many modern firearms apparently are not hurt by dry firing. So read the manual for your firearm. In the case of Springfield XDs (including XDm), as I quoted above, Springfield does not warn against dry firing.
If you look at how the striker, and striker retaining pin interact you'll notice that after prolonged dry firing you can damage the retaining pin. Yes XDs are not hurt by dry firing in order to field strip them, no I don't recommend dry fire practice, hundreds of dry fires 4 to 7 days a week, 4 week a month, for years.

Just like it's OK to fire +P ammo in you 9mm XD it's not a good idea to shoot tens of thousands round in +P.

Several of the real gunsmiths on this board have recommended that if you are going to dry fire you should use snap caps. I also believe this to be a good idea.

i don't plan on this gun lasting indefinitely i use it in ipsc

I have read about this in a few other threads and almost everyone agrees that dry firing is just fine and wont hurt your gun

I too use my 9mm tac for competition, it's not about wanting it to last forever or babying it's about not wanting it to fail during a match. I take care of my equipment, mags, etc.. so that I don't experience a failure during a match. Once something starts to show signs of wearing out I replace it.

I always use snap caps, just in case.

I dry fired my XDm 9mm, at my guess, around 500 times, and my striker retaining pin broke. After careful examination, my pin was thinner than the pin in other XD's. I replaced it with the heaver-than-usual pin from Pistolgear. Hasn't broken since after 500+ dry fires.

Keep in mind bad heat treatment will make steel brittle and stop it from flexing and absorbing impact, breaking it. Cheap parts may not be carefully made like more expensive parts like slides and frame rails.

I've dry fired my XD(m) thousands of times and put about 2,000 rounds through it, recently I removed the striker retaining pin and striker as well as the cushioning spring in front of the striker for cleaning. There was a shiny spot on the side of the roll pin...that's it.

I dry fire. Sure, the retaining pin may fail, but it is really a 1 min job to remove the old one and put in a new one. I inspected the pin after 5-600 dry fires and there was some wear (flattening) of the pin, but no much.

I found out the hard way. Do not dry fire without a snap cap. I broke the roll pin into many, many pieces.
