Let this be a lesson to always pay attention to what you load into your pistol. When you saw that it was different--and 9x18 is noticeably different from 9x19--you should have stopped and confirmed, not just assumed they were close enough...

Bring it to a gunsmith. You've got a live round in the chamber.

And stop with the caps already, 'k?

How did you chamber the round--load it out of the mag, or drop it into the chamber and let the slide close? In short--is the extractor over the rim?

If you're XD is like mine (I bet it is) you have to pull the trigger to get the barrel out, that's obviously not going to work.

You're only other option is to lock the slide open and ram a dowel rod down the barrel, but you're talking about putting your body parts in front of the muzzle of a loaded firearm. How much is your body parts/ life worth?

Take it to someone who has experience with this.

Again, I'd say gunsmith.

But, if you feel like doing it yourself...

Excercise extreme trigger discipline when you do this, and consider whether or not you can make a hole in your floor...(gunsmith may be looking better now...).

Take it to a solid countertop, tabletop, etc. Place the edge of the slide on it, not going over the barrel. take a steady grip on it, depressing the grip safety, and keep your bleedin' trigger finger (or any other finger, for that matter) away from the trigger. Press firmly down...firmly and rapidly may be necessary.

This may work. I definitely would NOT go from the muzzle (chopstick,
dowel, etc) on a live round unless the barrel was removed...

At this time, I'd highly recommend taking it to a gunsmith. Again.
