I ended up canceling my order too. Just don't have time for that stuff.

They draw you in with the free shipping then don't have the stuff to ship.

I just ordered a Blackhawk trouser and duty belt from them last night and this morning had an e-mail telling me they had "just run out" of stock.

This oddly sounds like a form letter to basically say, "we don't stock it so we order it when you do" which means if its not in stock with their suppliers it's coming in in 5-10 business days. I was going to order a Safariland 6365 holster from them too for my XD45, but now I suspect they "just ran out of that" too. I may place the order just to test the theory.

I have seen that letter before.
It's funny too that when I use the online chat there to inquire about whether an item is in stock it's usually, "we have one left."

Why do I not believe that and think that I will get that letter again.....

There's not a single reasonable justification they can use for not having the ability to show whether items are in stock or not. Other online retailers do it all the time.

I think it's just like you said, they don't keep much in stock and order when you order.

Do they save money by doing that? Sure. But it's poor customer service.

I'd rather spend a few more dollars on a company I feel I can rely on.

Many e-tailers run a virtual shop where the order is placed with the supplier and dropshipped directly to the customer without it ever hitting their docks (if they even have docks). I know when I worked for one of the big national/international computer distributors we used to offer a service like that to our resellers. The enduser could order from them, it would place in our system and we would print the resellers packing slip and return address label and ship it directly to the end user with no indication we were ever involved. It was a pretty smooth setup, but I suspect not all industries set it up perfectly.
