XDm Front sight replacement

Okay, I've looked all through the forum and I'm still a little confused. I have a XDM 9mm bi-tone. I want to change out the front sight with a Dawson .100 wide fiber optic sight. I have seen both ways to remove, right to left and left to right as you hold the gun. Which is it? Also, if you use a brass punch to remove it, is it really that difficult. I have a nylon drift to reinstall. Any advise would be appreciated.

I called just about every gunsmith in NH and they all said the same thing... No way...

I used a ten ton hydraulic press to get mine out... and that was miserable until I fabricated a jig to hold the slide out of of 3 inch angle iron with three huge C clamps...

Hate to say this but your XDm will probably laugh at a brass punch and hammer... Good luck with anything else...

There are several good gunsmiths that are on this forum that can install sights for you, do a search on sight installation and you will find 'em...

Just my 2 cents...
Regards,
Scott

jscottbaird, just wanted to let you know, my XDM giggled a little at my effort to remove the front sight with brass punch and hammer, but I had the last laugh. I used PB Blaster to soak the sight for an hour, then used the punch to remove the sight right to left. It was difficult to get it started but then came out without a whole lot of effort. It is hard, but isn't a..... No way......
Later, Kirk

I took mine to a gunsmith to replace the stock front sight. After beating on it a few times, he said screw it and broke out the dremel tool with a cutoff wheel. Definitely made short work of it.

I wrecked two brass punches trying to remove my front sights. gave in and sent it to Daniel from PRP and he got the job done perfect. Not sure what he used

that said, I did change my rear sights myself, which was much easier. still it dented my brass punch a little.

Remove to/from either side. Thr dovetail cut in the slide is even depth and parallel sides. Installation of the new sights is per the directions with that brand and model of sight. The dovetail base of the sight is what is slightly tapered. Installed from the correct side the new sight should start into the slot by hand. Breaking the sight being removed is no big deal. They shouldn't be reused. since already compressed on first install, the sights will probably be loose if reinstalled and not hold zero reliably. Installing the new set is where breakage is a bummer. One hit too high on the front blade and it snaps or can crack the vials of nightsights. NO warranty replacement if not performed by gunsmith.
However, I did my own with a homebuilt sight=adjustment tool.

the ten ton press was overkill... But once I got the slide secured in the jig it came out easy as pie... No damage or drama...
