- How much an XDm REALLY costs -

I understand that due to the pressures of the economy and the times many people who never
thought about owning a gun are looking into it. As well as a increase in first time shooters just
turning 21 and wanting to buy guns. Everyone has the same question and a lot of people are
giving the same answer. Of course all the buzz on every board from berretta to sniper post and
so many other forums some not even gun related is about the XDm series of guns. As the
New XDm in both .40s&w and 9mm are becoming rapidly more and more popular I can’t tell you
the number of times I’ve seen someone hop into forums and ask “HOW MUCH is the XDm in
the window”…. And for most posters it is either followed by or started with “I’m looking to buy
my FIRST handgun.” As my annoyance with constantly seeing this question come up in post not
related to that question as I was searching for everything ELSE about the XDm’s NOT associated
with their price ie, how well they shot, aftermarket parts, extended clips, known problems
and yada yada yada… I decided that I would find out how much it would cost to purchase
one as a PROPER new handgun owner who plans to take care and use the gun as it was intended.

Essetially… How much $$$$ would an XDm really cost for a first time handgun owner?

The Breakdown of each area the money went and why the cost

$650 - XDM in 9mm - Out the door I’ve seen where people have
payed less and at some of the other shops I was at where people
were buying the XDm I watched them pay much more too!!!

$145 - 5 x Extra Magazines - If you want this gun for
uspsa/target/plicking and/or for life you'll want more magazines
than the two it comes with. Plus if the reason your buying a gun
now is because of possible coming regulations then this guns
mags at 19 rounds will be the first to be band that you can
count on so get them now for cheap or pay $150 ea!!! if
and when the ban is placed don't believe me... t well, that's
what happened last time.

$130 - Ammo - The first 400 are to actually get comfortable
with the gun and if ittruly is your first gun I wouldn’t recommend
anything less than this before actually relying on your ability
with the gun to protect yourself. The other 50 rounds are for
just that Home Defense and are a hollow point round designed
for Law Enforcement.

$42 - Safety - This is on the cheap side but only because
I got a great deal on the two pieces of ear protection. I got
two because trust me, someone should go with you when
you shot and honestly who want to shoot alone?

$78 - Cleaning Supplies - If you buy the things listed about
you’ll have just about everything you would ever need to
properly clean you gun for a very long time. And a SIDE NOTE:
the slide worked MUCH better than stock oil after using the
tetra gun grease on the rails both on the frame and inside
the slide. So much smother my girlfriend could press the slide
release with her trigger hand thumb. Even "I" had trouble
easily doing this before the grease.


Of course this doesn’t include my 40 hours of research into
the XDm series, the full tank of gas and driving over 300 miles
in one day from home to purchase everything, and feeding me
and the girlfriend on the way to all these stores during our 10
hours of gun shopping and driving.

Now you many be wondering, why all the gun stores and if you
knew the area 100 miles of travel from home to find everything…
well, that’s largely due to the "call to arms race," as I’m calling
it, that has caused a shortage of ammo, guns, reloading supplies
and yes, even the cleaning equipment. Currently there is not one
store even on the internet that I could have purchased everything
from at once. So this would probably be an experience that most
would have to go through in order to be ready to shoot, care for,
and most of all enjoy the purchase of your new XDm series of hand guns.

SO, don’t think about it anymore, if you were one of those people
that I was talking about at the begging of this post, go out and do
the right thing and buy the XDm you wont be disappointed.
It’s a very accurate shooting gun, easy to clean and maintain,
thanks to Springfield’s design, and you’ll be very hard pressed to
find any gun that compares in Quality, Accuracy, and magazine
round capability for the price… off hand… There aren’t any.

And for those also finding people asking in the wrong place how much…
or the other phrase of "I'm new to handguns" direct them here.
and help grow the family of XD shooters... it just gained one today...

You can usually get a box of ammo or two and/or a free range trip with the purchase of your gun. I got 100 rounds of Aguila Hollowpoints (only 9mm they had) with my XDm, I don't know if they would make a good SD round but I have Winchester Rangers for that.

Interesting post, but except for the cost of the gun itself, and some variation on ammo costs depending on caliber of weapon purchased, everything in categories from 2 through 5 are "fixed costs" - they'd be essentially the same for any gun a new gun owner purchases. In essence, your study might be better titled "How much a Handgun really costs" and just vary the cost for a specific weapon in section 1.

Yeah, i agree You can usually talk to a dealer and get all sorts of free stuff. Me, well I was able to convince them to give me the two XDm promotional mats they had on their own counter, which I believe are $5. I got a few pens, a shirt, and two bear mugs. I would have loved to get some free ammo.... one problem, they didn't have any. Can't bargain for items they don't have. And they STILL don't have any. but thats okay, they always get me my guns when I need/want them and I have other places to get ammo. But YES like KCINNICK stated ALWAYS ASK FOR FREE STUFF, you never know what they might give you!

Yeah the 40 is nice, however, I'll wait for .45ACP and purchase one of those as well then have one on both ends of the XDm spectrum. Until then I will enjoy shooting the 9mm with friends, the girl, and the slight saving over .40ammo.

Some of the gun stores around here will give me free promo stuff just for walking through the door with the ammount of guns I have been buying lately, even from shops that did not have the gun I was looking for. I usually pick up a mag, cleaing item, box or two of bullets at every visit to the small shops.

Glad you found it intersting and hope by that you mean helpful, funny or something positve lol. who knows, but as far as pricing, actually you could get an XDM 40 in this price range, as my cousin has one and paid less for his than me for my 9mm as I also watched someone shell out $740 for a 9mm down in Seattle WA!!! The price does varry a bit as I mentioned in my post and $650 for either is doable for sure.

Ammo is the same too, you could get 40 ammo for $12 a box just like I could have bought $8 dollar a box 9mm ammo where I got my PMC but wouldn't shoot that crap in my worst enemy's gun let alone mine. Okay maybe I WOULD let him/her shoot it but I sure as heck won't

And i made it Specifically about the XDm because that's the gun everyone wants rigth now. As did I

That must be nice and either your a very scary person or very likable, either way sounds like your in good with your local stores and they take care of you. As they should, That's one of the WORST things about some gun shops, is the fact of how they treat the people who walk through there doors. And I think sometimes the gun shops and the people in them, are more intimidating to people then the actual guns behind the counter. Maybe that will be my next write up????

Another thing to consider in your calculations of all the other guns you have to buy once you buy your first.

You need a Carry gun..
A semi auto rifle...
A long range bolt rifle....
A commie gun.....
A 1911.....
