Going to drive out to the SA factory this Monday, and stop off at the XD "mother ship"... chat with some Custom Shop folks and drop off my XD9 and XD(m)40 for some quick work. While waiting for the work to get done (hope they can turn around same day), plan to drive over to the Rock Island Arsenal (about half hour drive from Geneseo) and tour around a bit.

Woo Hoo! Looking forward to seeing what the place looks like (already asked but no plant tour due to liability/insurance concerns), but maybe I can catch a glimpse of the Custom Shop.

If you can stop in and get the custom work done same day, I am taking my pistol with me to have them work on it... With the long turn around time when shipping in a weapon, I dont know how they could offer same day service...

While you're there can you find out if they sell direct to the public and get an idea of their prices. I'm heading to Iowa a couple times this summer and would be curious to know. Maybe I'll have them put trijicons on my XD. Thanks.

Will do.

I had to call ahead (talked with Deb Else of their Custom Shop) to schedule a specific day, based on their work load and the work I described. I have to drop off after 8:30am but before 10am, and they "hope" to have the work completed by end of the day. I'm switching out sights on the XD9 (from XS Big Dot tritiums, to Heine Straight Eight Slant Pro tritiums) and doing the Carry Package (with Heine Straight Eights) on the XD(m)40.

I have never been to the Mother Ship, but I have worked at the Rock Island Arsenal a few times. There is a Museum there, but it is closed on Monday. There is also a Confederate cemetery there, from when it was a prison camp during the Civil War. Also a display of tanks, and artillery pieces.

Never got a real good chance to look around since I was working, but may be next time.

I happen to live about 20 minutes from SA, so I've been there a number of times. Unfortunately you don't get a look at anything when you drop off your gun. You are basically in a little reception room area and you get to see the receptionist in her little cubicle. The outside door is locked and you must be buzzed in, and then there is a locked door after the reception area which holds all the fun stuff. Look careful when you're coming to the place, there is zero advertisement so it's easy to drive by. Also, they have done work for me in the past where I have dropped it off one day and picked it up the next. I had the carry package done on my xdm 40 if you want to know what it feels/looks like afterwards. Jeremy, from the custom shop, does a great job!

Oh, they don't sell directly to the public either. So no go.

If you're lucky you might get a look at the warehouse (where all the fun stuff happens) and a door MIGHT be left open to take a quick peek. Doubtful.

Also, Les Baer, Rock River Arms, Armalite, are all within 30 minutes of SA as well.

Rock Island Aresenal is fun to tour. They don't have quite as much going on as they used to, but just looking at the stuff they made/make is very cool.
