I agree you can't have too many Xds! Whats a 10mm like? Is it a draw between a 9mm and a 40?

Probably nothing that hasn't already been said... but, I own both the .40 (all black) and the 9mm (bitone stainless) and love them both. If I had to have just one I'd probably go with the .40 for shear fire power and from what I understand you can get a 9mm conversion barrel for the .40 so you can have your cake an eat it too so to speak with one pistol. Both are amazingly accurate consistently shooting very nice, tight groups at all distances. But I'm another one of the mindset that there is no such thing as having too many handguns period. Especially when they're as sweet as the XDm.

Not exactly. The 10mm is a .40 with some muscle. In fact, the .40 SW stands for .40 "Short and Wimpy." Okay.. Not really. But, the .40 is a 10mm round that has been shortened for less recoil. In testing, the FBI found that the 10mm round had too much recoil for the girly easterner wrists. They adopted the .40, finding that those weak wrists could preform better double taps with a lesser round. The 10mm is the ultimate auto-loader round. It has the same (or higher) energy as a .357 mag, but with a much greater capacity. Imagine being able to carry 16+1 of .357mag. It is the ultimate round for folks who spend a lot of time out in the hills where potentially dangerious animals play. Well, ultimate as far as pistol rounds go. Obviously, a lot of what I've said is in jest. However, you will find a growing number of folks that follow the 10mm round like a group of roadies. It truely is one of the best pistol rounds designed. However, the high pressure and recoil has turned a few folks away from it for personal use. I think the recoil is entirely manageable, and the benefits far outweight the downsides. I would take any XD series in 10mm, but a XDm would be on order the second it was released.

But alas, the big limiting factor for me in regards to the 10mm is cost. I shoot an average of 500 rds a week so the cost deferential is significant. I do agree that the recoil is very manageable and the energy is insane for an autoloader. And where I come from bigger is always better. Sure wish I could find cheap rounds for em' though. |

i personally am not a fan of the 10mm at all, at least not now. perhaps if the military adopts it (so it becomes super available and therefore cheap) which btw is not going to happen. ballistically, very very good, but ammo costs are exponentially higher than .9 .40 or .45. id take any of those before the 10. superhigh recoil makes it slow back on target (yes i have shot 10mms but will not buy one) plus that stuff is heavy to carry around. the 9mm has been killing things longer than any of these 4 calibers other than the .45 not sure which is older ill haft look into it. Any one know? I went with the 9mm XDM all black of course and love it. I am happy with the performance of the 9mm and would trust my life to it. any human sized threat will defiantly be stoppable with it. even in bear country when in the woods id trust it, stressing of course shot placement to get a charging bear haha. but hey thats what the extra 19 rounds below the barrel are for. plus the 38 more im carrying on my hip =D so all things considered, ammo cost and ballistics and experience shooting these calibers, for this gun 9mm it is for me. (and 40 short and whimpy thats worth a laugh =D)

but if ur shooting em out of a glock barrel be ware of reloading because the chambers are unsupported where they are machined above the feed ramp to ensure super reliable functioning (and they sure as hell are).... but this causes problems when reloading cause the bulges in the cases in the unsupported area are weak spots and can, will, and have caused Ka-Booms... theres plenty of info about this check out glocktalk.com or just google it

There is not a big difference in terminal ballistics between 9mm and 40, with current quality defense ammo. For me 9mm is the best all around choice.
