Its all about preference. When shopping my buddy kept pushing me for the .40, but I made the choice for the 9mm. I'm delighted with it. Shot the .40 and don't feel like I'm missing a thing.
I don't see how you could go wrong with either. |

I have asked a dozen Law Officers in the past few months what they carry and most answer .40. I will start asking why don't you carry a .45 Officer? Any thoughts? |

Yes , it was a mistake. You could have got this in 40 with a 21 round mag. Springfield Armory XD M 9212 .40 s&w Custom : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com

You'll be happy with the 9mm, don't worry.
I bought a .45 XD & 9mm XDM at the same time. My view was that both of these are military rounds (unlike the .40) and will be most readily available, especially the 9mm. Buy Speer Gold Dots or Federal HSTs in any caliber and as you say, you'll be stopping any BGs you hit. That being said...I think my next handgun will be a .40 that I can drop a 9mm barrel in, basically for the same reason I got the others first - while .45 & 9mm are commonly available military rounds, the .40 is becoming increasingly popular amongst LE & general shooters, so this way all my bases will be covered. |

There ARE no mistakes in purchasing a gun! A couple of hours of overtime, a sold piece of whatever in your basement or garage, and you can also have the .40. I have a .40, two 9mm's, and a .22 handgun. I've attached a pic of the "family" minus one Kel-Tec PF-9 (awesome gun for CCW) since I'm having the trigger worked on. I have the XDM 9mm, as you can see. I love it. I plan on the .40 at some point but like I said, you can't make a mistake unless it's just a plain POS well known to fail and put your life or a loved one's life at risk. I will admit, there is one more that I carry not shown here, and not a Springfield. It's a .40, and is my primary duty weapon. If asked what I carry on duty, I would say .40. Only because it offers THAT MUCH MORE than a 9mm and the powers that be allow it. However, off duty and for CC purposes, I am a die-hard "nine is fine" guy. The sheer weight difference alone plus the typically higher capacity sells me every time. Even without +P ammo, which I do carry actually, you are right the BG will get the point.

I chose my 9mm XDm for many of the same perks you noted (cost, capacity, etc) and I definitely don't have regrets.
I've also heard a lot of the "Buy .40 get a conversion barrel" arguments, but several people have noted their conversion barrels are not as accurate as the Springfield factory ones (probably due to not having a gunsmith fit them, but still). Guns do typically work best with the caliber they were designed for. I'm perfectly happy with my 9mm, and boy it's a fun shooter. 19+1 is fun times at the range.

All my carry guns are 9mm.
I think you're just second guessing your decision. 9mm is a fine caliber. Cheaper to shoot, very available, well it used to be, available. I never cared for the 40cal snap and flip up recoil. Some call that not being able to handle it, but whatever, I just prefer the 9mm or 45ACP. I've had and sold 40cal pistols. I went up to a 45ACP instead of the 40cal, when I wanted up my caliber. Stop second guessing your purchase, you bought a fine firearm.. |

Oh that is nice. The black parts on the SS seem darker than the one I had looked at. Had I compared that one to the black I may have been more bi curious. For the gun that is! But really it's nice looking. My black one doesn't have the white lettering on the side either. It's matte black through and through without a single spot of white except for the three dot sights. Excellent choice!

I pick up my XDM 9mm Black tomorrow from my local FFL. I chose the 9mm because of the less expense to raise my marksmanship skills. I currently own an S&W 625-8 .45 ACP revolver which covers all thoughts described above for greater knockdown power. One comment on the blessings of having a 20 round magazine for self defense; if your assailant has a gun I doubt you will live if your first 3 rounds do not put the bad guy down. (My humble opionion)
However, if I find the XDM 9mm performing as well as promised, I likely will be first in line to buy an XDM .45 when SA brings them to market.
