Tight grouping (in the wrong spot) means you're executing the wrong fundamentals consistently. The same reason why when i began shooting an M1A my groups suffered. It was different than an AR platform or bolt gun. But through countless rounds, and focusing on the fundamentals of marksmanship, and learning to drive the gun properly, groups tightened, and down range consistency improved. I had an HK USP that I couldn't hit a milk jug at 10 paces with. It was fundamentals all day long. Worked on them more when I purchased an XD(m), and though my first groups were off slightly, it's dead center now. I'm sure there are guns out there that are genuinely not correct. But I'd hedge a strong bet its much less than the number of people complaining about poor group location. Just saying, fundamentals. Go let 2 COMPETENT instructors shoot it. If they're all off too, maybe it is the gun.

...or, put it in a RANSOM and remove the human factor all together.

When I first got my XDm 9mm (well, I have two of them, but they both shoot the same for me), I was consistently low and left. It was frustrating because I knew from things I read on here that the problem was more than likely me. So, I just kept focusing on the basics and concentrated on doing things correctly. I was delighted when after having to take about a 3 month hiatus from shooting (I live in northern MN and only have outdoor range available to me) I went to the range and found that I'm not shooting low any more! And although I'm still shooting slightly left, it isn't nearly as pronounced as it used to be, so continuing to practice during the winter months definately helped w/ the fundamentals. I've been to the range three times now in the last couple of weeks and I'm significantly more accurate when I shoot now than I was late last fall, so it isn't just a fluke.
So just keep practicing, it'll come, and these guns are so much fun to shoot!

Yep! Practice makes perfect! Glad to hear the winter blues didn't effect your shooting

changed from medium to large backstrap. Problem solved.
Say what you will but hundreds of different people shooting low/left is not the problem. Different hands, different results. I didn't change my bad habits, I changed the backstrap.
Those who guessed the right backstrap from the beginning had no problems.

I changed the backstrap also and it solved the "shooting left" problem. =D

I too shoot a little low, a little left. So it seems everyone agrees its the operator and trigger. Without replacing the trigger what is the one thing the operator can do to improve?

Fundamentals...
My hands are on the small side of medium; but, I've found I have had the best success using the largest backstrap (or the medium with a sleeve).
Find a grip that affords the greatest stability and that is as consistent as possible every time. I use the thumbs-forward (straight thumbs) grip. Google it and you'll find plenty of video to talk you through achieving it. It is pretty intuitive.
While you are working on your consistent and stable grip, you can start working on your trigger press. Concentrate on steadily preeeeeeesssssing straight back with the meaty pad of your trigger finger. Use snap caps.

Some people would call that a liability in the platform. I just call it knowing your gear and training to it. If anything, the XDm is just less forgiving of bad habits. It has made me a better shooter on other platforms like the Glock and the M9. The XDm is still my "go-to" for SD.
