Having owned two XD40s (one XD40SC Bitone and one XD40 Service black), I could not resist getting another XD40SC Bitone when I saw a used one for a good price. When I brought the use one home, the first thing I did was to clean it. To my surprise, I noticed a crack on the ejector pin! I know this topic was briefly discussed here, but I could not find a satisfactory answer.

The used XD40SC Bitone, serial number 356xxx:

Here's the one I bought in 2005, serial number 425xxx, with hundreds and hundreds of rounds through it:

Now, the ejector pin on the serial #356xxx (used gun I bought):

Summary:

1. The newly purchased used XD40SC Bitone, serial #356xxx, has a different ejector pin than my XD40SC Bitone, serial #425xxx (purchased in 2005).

2. The used XD40SC Bitone (serial #356xxx) ejector pin has a crack in it.

3. The serial #425xxx gun has a beefier-appearing ejector pin.

The serial #356xxx XD (used one recently purchased) has LESS wear than my #425xxx XD, making me believe that the older model XD40SC Bitone has an inherently WEAKER ejector pin, thus the crack being apparent despite presumptively less rounds through the gun.

Not willing to re-sell this defective gun to an unsuspecting person, I suppose I will either have to send it back to XD or see if I can return the gun to the shop... What a hassle. Should have just bought another new one.

It is really no big deal.
It isn't worth getting rid of the gun or taking it back to the dealer.
SA will replace it for whether you bought the gun new or used.
If you would rather fix it yourself (and that would be my suggestion),
order one from Pistolgear.

All you need is a small punch.

But oh wait, you blocked them out...

My XD9 tac has the newer ejector with the same crack too. I have never had an ejection problem... with the gun.

i replaced mine too ... its a 10 dollar part just call SA ... it takes about 5 min to change out

Kind of weird they look so much different. Not that far apart in serial no. The broken on looks stamped and the newer one almost looks to be milled, or could be forged I guess. I agree the newer one looks stronger.

Now I have to check my bi-tone 40SC! Should have the newer style as I bought it in 2007.

There is a mixture of each still floating around. Some have the MIM part and other have the stamped parts. If you have a problem with either, it is an easy DIY job to swap.

That is not a crack caused by use but it is caused by the stamping of the part and SA will probably replace it. All of my XDs are like the other pictures which are probably MIM parts. I don't really believe there is anything wrong with the part other than cosmetics but it wouldn't hurt to call SA.

Took the suspect gun referenced above, serial #365xxx, to the gunsmith today, who CONFIRMED that the ejector pin is cracked.

I will be sending it back to SA for repairs and their usual function test.

ppmd - very disappointed at the discovery but am looking forward to experiencing the famous SA Customer Service for the first time.

Yes, it needs to be replaced and having SA do it is a good option.

It's not difficult to do, and learning how to remove/ reinstall the frame trigger components is a good thing to do, since then you are prepared to do a good cleaning every x rounds fired- I don't know what x should be. I did it while installing a trigger safety lever from Powder River, and after the initial fear of the unknown, it's not rocket science. There are multiple videos and takedown guides here on xdtalk to walk you through it. When the gun comes back, why not ask the gunsmith to take 5 minutes and show you how to do a detailed strip?

BTW, good eyes and catch of the fracture.

The SA customer service is really good.

I decided to get some parts polished and that is when I learned to do a complete disassembly.
It really wasn't hard and I actually enjoyed doing it.

The grip saftey was a bit tricky.
The mag release was tough because I took it completely out.
I wouldn't have got it in without the video.

Anyway, glad things worked out for the OP.
I guess I need to look at my own ejectors........
